Canberra is the capital of... um... Uzbekistan?

I've never watched Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? before until tonight and I'm amazed that people will actually go on that show to humiliate themselves.

One contestant tonight (a Grade 10 biology teacher) thought Canberra was the capital of Uzbekistan. His 5th grader helper guessed Australia. Now, the teacher's class was in the audience, and so was the school's principal. Jeff asked the principal which country had Canberra as its capital and the woman said, "It sure isn't Australia!"

The next contestant was even worse.

Is this common for this programme? Are the contestants usually this stupid?

Yes, Neil, I almost think the producers go out of their way to look for people who will only go to a certain point before reaching frustration or failure.

It's not the same type of contestant that you would find on "Jeopardy!"

By the way....I AM smarter than a 5th grader! (I'd better be, hehehe!)

You couldn't have me on that show with some of these people. I'd go apeshit on them if they got them wrong, especially on the geography and history questions. Guess that's what happens when you grow up with encyclopedias in your household.

Yeah, we find to be very entertaining to make fun of "stupid people'" in America but few actually look in the mirror and think, yeah 'I'm a fucking retard.' when they are.

I remember that when "Who wants to be a millionaire?" was on televison, some news organization researched the type of questions and their difficulty asked in various countries on the show.

No surprise, the U.S. had the easiest questions.

But I must say that there are stupid people all over the world. One time I saw Germany's versoin of Family Feud. The question was: "Name a food that people think of when they think of Germany." The contestant's answer was bananas.

There are more people in Uzbekistan than Australia, and they've got far more history and regional signficance than people seem to realize. They're really not that obscure. Just poor.

Aww, Canberra's not bad. It's got great things in it - the museums, gallery, National Library... mind you, it'd be a boring place to live. (I'm in Melbourne, myself).
