Ok, so my father was just diagnosed with prostate cancer, and I dont know what to do or what to say. What is it, what are the types? Is it a death sentence? UGH, I just dont understand, and I want to. I was up all night thinking about it, it is scary. It's really worrying me. I dont know how to express myself, so any help would be appreciated.

Hi 190E

You need more info. This could be trouble, but likely just a bad few months. My 54 year old brother had his prostate removed in April and a 50 year old friend had his removed in May. Both went through a few months that were not too much fun, but have bounced back well. They both have an excellent chance of dying from something else at a ripe old age. So... get some more info then go give you dad a hug (even if it's just a phone hug) and support him anyway you can.

I had prostate cancer AND bladder cancer when I was only 47....the type I had was transitional cell....fast growing type....I was in stage 4, grade 4.
I went thru 6 mos of chemotherapy which consisted of Cis Platen, Velban, Methatrexate and Adriamycin.
The chemo helped but I still had to have major surgery (12 hrs) to remove the prostate and bladder. I had an Indiana Pouch procedure.
He NEEDS to see a Urologist ....NOW !
The sooner he sees a Dr the better !!
Don't be dumb like me and wait.
I thought I had a bladder infection and tried to treat it on my own.
WRONG !
Don't do that !!!!
Send me a PM if you wish.
Put me in contact with your Dad if you wish....I've helped others in my own area with cancer. So far, I'm still cancer free after 12 years .....YESSSSSSSSS !

Surf over to Cancer.org

That is the site for the American Cancer Society. They are the largest private not for profit source of funds for scientists studying Cancer. Part of their mission is cancer education, and you can call them 24 hours a day at 800-ACS-2345 and speak with a cancer information specialist.

They are a wealth of knowledge for all types of cancer and have sections for patients, family, friends.

well my father goes in tomorrow to find out the extent of it, he is getting an MRI, though the doctors think that it is treatable by radiation, but they dont know how much it has spread if at all, and they know he has two pollips.

That's GREAT! It sounds like he is in good hands. Once it's determined what he is dealing then he can make good decisions. Your job is to be supportive and if he needs it, an advocate.

It's good they caught it. Remember, great things are being done with prostate cancer.

Take care,

The use of MRI in evaluating prostate Ca is still very experimental and relies on a very experienced radiologist interpreting the results. Hopefully he's already had bone scans, a transrectal biopsy and psa tests to fill in the whole picture for decisions about the risk of spread and the best and safest treatment options.

This is a huge topic and there is a lot of information. Feel free to PM me anytime if you have specific questions, hopefully I can give you some insight from both sides of the fence as a young doctor and also as my father also was diagnosed with prostate Ca 2 years ago succesfully reated with robotically assisted radical prostatectomy.
