Captain escapes, pirates dead

wOOt..Go Navy!!!!

I don't want to invade anyone over it, that would be way too neocon.

Let's hear it for the French...they did a great job too...(!)

Oh, and I agree with boogalee. Don't invade anybody.
I don't remember saying it, but welcome boogalee.

Thanks White Eagle! Your avatar is awesome by the way.....|

The Admiral said that Phillips was tied up and had not tried to escape, so that part of CNN's early reporting was wrong.

I am very pleased that the captain was rescued. Patience was required and it worked out well.

The remainder of these scum bags will make for some great target practice. We should hang out until they decide to do something else for a living. And tons of thanks to the useless UN for continuing to be worthless fuckwads.

They have a continuous, rotating crop of human shields. They aren't all in one place, and they move around constantly. I don't know what you think should be done, but a lot of experts have been working on this for a long time, and when I hear them discussing it on the radio they say it's not easy to figure out what to do.

As for a "cleanup operation" in Somalia, I have two words for you: Blackhawk Down.

My thoughts exactly. If you invaded, it would be looked down upon, and possible penalties put down on the states. If you went in as peacekeepers(HA), then it would be to help the civilians, and try to guarantee that gets to where it's needed, and if anything was done otherwise, chances are you would have another Blackhawk Down incident, except they might actually send in the tanks, and the bombers, and pull what they done in Iraq.. And that has been going SSSOOO well, hasn't it.

^ That's exactly my feeling. Invasion is a bit extreme but we cannot put up with shit. Pirates on the open seas should be blasted to kingdom come.

Not sure what the UN has to do with any of this. Those are Italian, Saudi, Greek and Spanish tankers/ships being held so those states are responsible, not the UN.

Sometimes I wonder just what people have been doing over the past decade while all these problems were building.

Yeaaaaa, Mazda3boi. Who knows? He could have done it.!!!!

Last time mazda checked in, he was in Bangkok. He has an entirely different scenario to deal with:

BANGKOK – Thai soldiers sprayed automatic weapons fire into the air and threw tear gas to clear protesters blocking roads in the capital in the pre-dawn darkness Monday. Demonstrators responded by hurling at least one gasoline bomb and 70 people were reported injured, most by tear gas.

I trust that he is safe.

^ Although I agree with the cause, I don't agree with the violent action taken .

The UN would be involved(if at all) as all of the states mentioned are members of the organization.

And jack, since I forgot before, the UN looks for PEACEFUL resolution until it is no longer an option.

Not everyone is big on shooting people they don't like.

The UN has addressed the piracy problem in recent resolutions:

Resolution 1816; Resolution 1851
[States may] Use, within the territorial waters of Somalia, in a manner consistent with action permitted on the high seas with respect to piracy under relevant international law, all necessary means to repress acts of piracy and armed robbery.

International law sanctions the use of lethal force as a right of self-defense against armed attacks.

Not to bring in a red herring, but the international laws and conventions on piracy have been around for a long time, and would be eminently suitable as a model, if not the actual law, for the proper way to deal with terrorists (who, like pirates, are non-state actors, albeit with different motivation).

Oh, and I agree with boogalee. Don't invade anybody.

We don't need to invade: since the UN says "all necessary means" to suppress piracy, we should use any means available to find from the captured one where his bosses are -- and just send a cruise missile signed by the folks who rescued the captain.

The trouble with the "hanging out" concept is that the waterway there is sufficiently large that keeping it covered at all times is essentially hopeless... unless we want to risk a carrier group in that firing zone.
