Two of Pope Benedict XVI's top advisors have addressed the sexual abuse cases that have shaken the Roman Catholic Church, but appear to have only added more fuel to the fire.

On Monday, the Vatican's Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone said it was homosexuality that caused pedophilia, and not celibacy.

Bertone made the comments in Chile, where one of the Church's highest profile sex abuse cases involves a priest having sex with young girls.

"Many psychologists and psychiatrists have demonstrated that there is no relation between celibacy and pedophilia. But many others have demonstrated, I have been told recently, that there is a relation between homosexuality and pedophilia. That is true," he told a news conference. "That is the problem."

The remark has drawn scorn from gay rights advocates.

If it weren't for the lack of contrition and pity shown to the countless thousands of victims of child rape by the clergy world-wide, one could almost pity them for their ignorance.

The Catholic Church needs to get their collective heads out of their collective asses. They're so archaic it's not even funny. They need to modernize and completely overhaul their tenets and power-structure (kinda like the GOP) starting with helping the victims of child molestation instead of protecting the priests, and then moving on to recognizing, if not acknowledging, homosexuality as something other than a deviant lifestyle, a stance they've stuck to for years.

And all this comes from someone born and raised Catholic...

It amazes me that the Catholic Church cannot even stick to its latest teaching. It has been admitted that homosexual tendancies are "created" -- and that was from John Paul II and Benedict. Of course, gays were then supposed to be celibate...which has been so successful for controlling costs in the church.

Celibacy has been maintained primarily because of the church's worry that a married clergy will cost more (wife, kids, etc.) Priests in the parishes work for pennies compared to what those that leave make in the world (which is one reason so many priests left the church). Of course those in the Vatican live like kings with trappings that would make even the richest people in the world blush.

The moron making the comment comes from that ilk. He should read the teachings of the church and realize pedophilia and homosexuality have no connection. Gays are attracted to MEN.....not boys. There is a substantial difference.

As much as I have tried to stay in the Catholic Church, it apears more and more they are causing me to rethink my position. This Sunday I'm going to a gay-friendly church near Dupont Circle.

Your points illuminate the extent of panic that the Vatican hierarchy is facing. They can't get their message straight and they definately don't know a damn thing about sex. I hate to tell the Cardinal but if they eliminated all homosexuals in the church clergy, there would be another crisis -- no clergy. When I was studying at one point for ordination, I would estimate the majority of priests I got to know were gay. The problem with the Vatican is that it is so out of touch with reality, it doesn't know which way is up. The comments from the other Cardinal about "gossip" hurting the pope while referring to the child abuse crisis was insensitive and ignorant. But then, those at the Vatican are usually kiss-asses looking to better their lot in life and they could give a damn about the flock they are supposed to shepard.

The crisis and these comments only serve to point out that the celibacy rules and sexual teachings of the church are not only impossible but dangerous.
