In his latest interview, Burke said the church was “the pillar of marriage” and challenged the pope’s revolutionary “Who am I to judge?” remark on gay people.

“The acts must be judged; I do not think that the pope thinks differently. They are sinful and unnatural. The pope never said we can find positive elements in them. It is impossible to find positive elements in an evil act.”

I never realized that loving someone was an "evil act".

Cardinal Burke broke (one of the) eleventh commandments - "Thou shall not diss thy boss."

The same sort of dissent happens with conservative pontiffs as well, it was just the liberals getting demoted and cast out back then. In truth "The pope is infallible" is missing a comma; "The pope is infallible, as long as he agrees with me." is the way things have always been in the Church.

It is that he does not like the direction in which it is being steered.

The Pope only claims to be infallible when he intends to be and speak " ex cathedral" on faith and morals. In practice, they have been careful to use it only on matters of faith on which there is no chance of being shown to be wrong. The immaculate conception of Mary, for instance--that she was conceived without original sin. But, I believe it has never been used on a matter of morals. Contraception, for example.,The Pope has forbidden it, including for desparatly poor families. But he has not invoked his alleged infallibility, leaving himself free to reverse his position abruptly. As I have previously said, the church has no moral compass. The Pope does not see how gratuitously evil his prohibition of contraception is. They did not see the wrong of allowing sexual abuse by priests lto continue. They apparently do not see how wrong it is to burn heretics at the stake. At least two burners are canonized saints: Thomas More and Robert Bellermine. Schools and churches are named for them.'

That infallibility is only in effect under certain very narrow conditions.

I'm not sure it would phase Burke even if Francis had made his statements infallibly -- Burke is more likely to consider himself infallible and ignore the pope.
