Okay, everyone, so California held its primary elections this week. Under California's new "top two" rule, all nominees are placed on the ballot during the primary election, held in June. The top 2 candidates with the highest votes (regardless of party) will be placed on the November ballot, for the final election.

In the race for San Diego mayor, there were 4 candidates. All 4 candidates supported same-sex marriage. The candidates were Carl DeMaio (a gay Republican), Nathan Fletcher (a straight independent), Bonnie Dumanis (a lesbian Republican), and Bob Filner (a straight Democrat).

Carl DeMaio
received the highest amount of votes in the primary.

Bob Filner received the 2nd highest amount of votes, which means Carl DeMaio and Bob Filner will be competing against each other in the November election.

This race is interesting because if Carl DeMaio wins in November, he will be the first openly gay Republican mayor of a major U.S. city.

It also puts many LGBT people in a tough position because most LGBT people usually vote Democrat. But the Republican candidate is the gay man; the Democrat is straight.

However, Carl DeMaio has a lot of support from Republicans, including even social conservatives who have donated to his campaign & held fundraisers for him. Carl DeMaio's donors include prominent conservatives like Doug Manchester and Terry Caster who also donated to "Yes on Prop 8". Furthermore, most Republicans in San Diego appreciate Carl DeMaio's strong stance against unions, pro-business attitudes, and desire to protect taxpayers and cut wasteful spending.

Carl DeMaio's domestic partner is Johnathan Hale, the owner & publisher of San Diego Gay & Lesbian News -- the most read newspaper for San Diego's LGBT community.

Yeah, and he already said that he will never make LGBT issues the focus of his work. Lovely guy.

But why should Carl DeMaio make LGBT issues the focus of his work?

He's not a gay activist, nor is he running to lead a gay rights organization.

He's running for mayor of San Diego, a major U.S. city that is relatively conservative, compared to cities like San Francisco or L.A.

Would you expect President Obama to make Black issues the focus of his work?

That's nowhere near the point. Paris also has a gay mayor, and he hasn't made LGBT issues the focus of his work either. HOWEVER, you don't say this before you get elected. It's a typical homocon "I'm a normal guy who just so happens to be gay" assholery, and it grosses me out. If being gay is not an issue, then you shouldn't have to make those statements. Plus, they DO alienate the LGBT community. From what I gather, they aren't very fond of him out there.

Yeah, sucks all the candidates on the ballot for me are not Southeast Asian, whatever am I to do? :(

Socialist Conservatives don't care about one gay man, it's when this one gay man suddenly is with another man and wants even the most minimum of rights afforded to married straight couples that there is something wrong. They're happy giving the candidate money as long as he's publicly celibate, none of that "I thank my boyfriend/husband for supporting me during the campaign" shit.

But that's the rub. If he was a gay Democrat, he wouldn't have to prove his "gayness." Gay Republicans are held to a different standard than Gay Democrats are.

It's like when the mainstream media ask Republican women, "Why don't you submit to your husband?" or "Why don't you be a stay-at-home mom?" but they don't ask those same questions of Democrat women.

I noticed you have a rainbow flag in your avatar pic.

LGBT Republicans are also part of what the rainbow flag represents.

I think that if Carl DeMaio wins, it will be a win for the LGBT community. It will send a message out that you can be an openly gay man, a conservative Republican, have a boyfriend/partner/husband, and still be successful in politics.

It will be a message of hope to young gay youth coming out, especially from conservative backgrounds, or perhaps from the Midwest or Deep South. They will know that they can become an atheist liberal gay hippie and move to San Francisco, if they want to. Or they can be openly gay, religious, & keep their conservative views. Either way, they can live their lives on their own terms.

See, this is why you're not taken seriously. You assume that if a gay person doesn't believe in your skewed perception of politics, that they are automatically a "liberal, atheist, hippie" that moves to a big gay city and lives some flamboyantly fabulous life. Well, I defy your viewpoint, and I am also none of the adjectives you describe. You claim to be inclusive by supporting this GOP gay candidate, but you can't help but criticize and spew venomous bile about most gay people on here; be it their lifestyle, skin color, or sex life.

No, that was not my intention.

I was trying to come up with an example of the most leftist person I could describe. Was it a caricature? Maybe. But I was trying to illustrate that gay youth should know that they can be openly gay and be a leftist if they want to be, or they can be openly gay and as politically conservative as they want to be. Or anything in between.

^ But why do you even need to come up with the "most leftist person" you can describe? Were you so descriptive with your most "rightist person" example in the following sentence? No, you weren't. You've been posting crap like this all day between this forum and Hot Topics. You're not fooling anyone here.

The guy looks like a psychopath.

^ I don't think the other guy, Bob Filner, is any better.

Must be something in the water.

Okay, gay youth should know that they can be openly gay, be a member of the NRA, and go muddin' in a 4x4.......IF they want to....

This.

In every argument you make, you undercut your point by exhibiting a naked, visceral hate for the homos who are livin' the dream, while you cling to some mean-spirited, self-absorbed and frankly unpleasant vision of what it means to be a homosexual.

You consistently make false and sweeping generalizations that seem to be based on being shut out of the 'gay' community and are trying to find refuge among the people who openly hate what you are.

And what pray tell, does the rainbow fag represent? Is it the same for everyone  or have you unilaterally decided what that representation might be? I smell a bit of "group-think" here. George Orwell would be proud.
