Caroline Kennedy to seek Senate seat

Thank-you. However, I don't recall saying Hillary Clinton ran with about the same level of "experience" as Caroline Kennedy. I recall saying above that Clinton had no "governing" or "legislative" experience when she ran and that she was barely a New Yorker. This isn't disrespectful, it is reality.

That's why I started my post with, "Many who've run for Congress are new to elected office, and even some with no experience who're appointed to fill a vacated seat do fine." The first part of that sentence was about Hillary and the second about Caroline, in the context of what you say above.

I also stated my opinion that it was the Clinton name that got her elected and I also stated that all of that was fine as she was elected not appointed.

I know you did, and you're wrong that the Clinton name got her elected. It got her a foot in the door but she spent many months traveling around New York state on a "listening tour," learning about the state and its needs and coming up with ideas for addressing those needs, which she presented to the people of New York in many appearances, speeches and debates. Also the Clinton name was used against her as much as it worked in her favor.

You also said, "Seems Hillary benefitted and Caroline is benefitiing from a famous relative in politics more than any real qualifications of their own," which, as I've pointed out, is not a fair characterization since Hillary had many years of professional and public service and campaigning as qualification before becoming Senator that far outweighs what Caroline has.

I find your "judgment" that CK's life was easy, off of a silver, especially considering her father was murdered in front of a live audience, her uncle was shot dead, mother dead from cancer and her brother crashed in the ocean, to be presumptuous. You don't know her or her struggles.

Everybody struggles. That's part of the human condition, personal challenges. Some go through personal struggles while also having to work to put food on the table, some personally struggle while also fighting for causes bigger than themselves, some personally struggle on a trust fund. As I said, there's nothing shameful about struggling while living a pampered life on Park Avenue, and personal struggles are just as difficult in a penthouse as in a studio walk-up. But it's also true that living in great privilege, both financially and off the golden glow of celebrated adored parents, makes for a life experience very different from people without those privileges. You're wong in assuming I don't know about that. I think John Jr and Caroline Kennedy dealt with their personal struggles excellently well, with integrity and grace, but it's not presumptuous to notice the other elements of their lives.

^ Oh how I do wish non-New Yorkers -- you know, the rabble, the riff-raff, the provincials -- would stay the fuck out of our bidness. Let them worry about Christina Matthews fucking up the works, dontchaknow.

It's only New Yorkers who think this way. You wouldn't believe how much we "non-New Yorkers" don't give a shit about you.

In any case Kennedy shouldn't get the seat. Who is she, Palin? She gets a taste of Presidential politics and decides she wants two hands full of senatorial goodies?
Now, while I don't think she deserves that seat, if they decide to give it to her, I'd like to see how well she defends it in two year's time. That'll tell us if she's got balls big enough to compare to Clinton's. She could very well be a sensation as easily as she could be a dud.

What authority denies the voters of NY their participation in this process?

I presume the NY Constitution. The point is; Caroline had her entire life to get involved in politics or in public life, but has waited until now when there is an appointment available to her.

Interesting blog piece from Dave Cullen in Salon regarding the American weakness for "royalty":

American monarchists? (The travesty of considering Caroline)

No. It is total bullshit. It is the same fantasy that deludes us that because Caroline is the last of this holy line, or because she was a cute little kid during Camelot, she will grip the mighty Excalibur and reign triumphant over a grateful people.http://open.salon.com/content.php?cid=64701&source=newsletter

Caroline comes from good stock.

Good stock produces a child who

passes the bar exam on the first try (not third)

doesnt pilot a plane beyond his/her knowledge

publishes a successful magazine

I'm starting to agree with you, iman -- there are far better candidates for the seat.

Your just a qualified for this job as Caroline, aren't you? Are you free? Are you available? Can you go up to Albany and give Paterson a hand job?

I think you would make a fine Senator.

Oh wow you are really confused. I NEVER SAID HILLARY CLINTON DOES NOT HAVE EXPERIENCE.

I'm not at all confused, and I never claimed you said Hillary didn't have experience.

I quoted you verbatim: "Seems Hillary benefitted and Caroline is benefitiing from a famous relative in politics more than any real qualifications of their own." And I pointed out some of Hillary's history that reveals real qualifications of her own that made her much more qualified for the job in 2000 than Caroline is today.

Your list is a waste of time.

How many senators can you name that weren't born in the state they serve or at least lived there 10 years before they became senator?

I really don't see why "legislative" or "governing" experience should somehow trump other public experience. The question is; Does the candidate's experience prepare them for the job they are seeking and is the public familiar with the candidate?

The acceptance of outsider candidates varies in different areas of the country. Northeastern states are probably more accepting of candidates that were born elsewhere than are the South or the West. Penna has a Governor from NY and a Senator from Oklahoma, although they have both been long term residents. NY and California are probably the most accepting of all.

If a person brings with them exceptional ability and experience, as Ms. Clinton did, a state would be foolish to reject her. Of course, if one is from a more parochial state, acceptance of an "outsider" is much less likely.

^^ but if you do a good job Kenny, this 39 room mansion with 2 swimming pools could be your new home .... unfortunately its in Albany but hey ..... nothing's perfect! (*8*)

sung by the great Neil Diamond:

Oh, Jezus H Christ, he should gargle with razor blades... Neil Diamond, dear, that is.
Then you're really gonna hate the Christmas present I mailed that should arrive Monday or Tuesday, 'Neil Diamond Sights and Sounds of New York'. At the 2:27 mark, it even has a small clip of him feeding the pigeons in Central Park. :(

Andrew Cuomo,Tom Suozzi, far more qualified than caroline Kennedy.Even Hillary got the seat with the consent of the New York electorate....this Kennedy coup should not come to pass, and if she wants the seat badly eniough,go out and earn it in the 2010 special election and work for it,like Hillary whatever her faults undoubtedly did.

Well, we have uncovered the Obama Caroline connection: they both have spotty voting records. Of course, in Caroline's case, she was not even "Present".

The Democrat registered at her current address on Manhattan's Upper East Side in 1988. According to city Board of Elections records, she missed Democratic mayoral primaries in 1989, 1993, 1997, and 2005.
She also missed the 2002 gubernatorial primary and general election, when Democrat H. Carl McCall lost to Republican incumbent George Pataki.
She skipped the 1994 general election, when Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan was running for reelection for the same seat she hopes to take over if Clinton is confirmed as secretary of state.

You can possibly see from the reject shots that I post here that I love this place -- perhaps you've seen (but not noticed) me as I drag Alfie and a tripod and assorted camera gear throughout the borough at 3am or 4am, in rain, bitter cold and snow, looking for that one shot that captures a moment in the life of the city that I love, one that is now my home.

You can't love the cities without loving humanity, cities are all human, they are entirely our creations. As much as I love the natural world, I could not live there and distrust those that choose to. Like the Unibomber, in varying degrees, they really don't like themselves and their fellow humans.

I see NY Mag has a Reasons to Love NY issue. Mostly feel good bullshit from what I saw - all they really needed was your "reject" photos.

Nice dog, Chance - his coloring reminds me of your politics or maybe the Giants record - spotty or ambiguous, but beautiful nonetheless, the dog I mean.
