I'm looking for some advice from some of the pet owners on here.
I've got a cat (5 mo old), I've had him for a couple months now. He is very hyper, as would be expected from a cat his age. My question is should I get him a friend? I know he gets bored a lot, especially since I work all day. I think another cat, close to his age, would make him happier and give him someone to play with when I am not here. The thing I worry about is will he get upset and jealous because there is another cat? I know with some animals that is a problem, but I figure since he is so young it wouldnt bother him as much.

Any suggestions would be greatly appeciated!

how about letting the cat play outside while you are at work?

Kittens are hyper. Getting the cat fixed will calm him down. You want to do this whether it is a boy or girl. The boy for reasons stated above and the girl because a female cat in heat is extremely annoying. It can be done at 6 months of age. Another cat to play with will help, if you can handle 2. I suggest the same sex cat as the one you already have.

He's a boy, and I do plan on getting him fixed once he reaches 6mos. (later this month).
I've heard that he will calm down when he gets fixed. Its not that I mind him being hyper, I expected that when i got him. I just want to make sure he is a happy cat.

As for letting him outside, I cant do that here. I live right next to an interstate, plus too many people let their dogs run free here.

Thanks for the advice, its helping!

He might be a cat that likes being the "only" cat in the house. After you have him fixed and he starts being destructive, that could be a sign of loneliness, which could mean that he's unhappy. If you decide to get him a playmate, get another "kitten" so he could bond with, and take care of. I got my very first cat when he was 2 months old, then a year later added another 2 month old cat, then the next year a 3 month old cat, and they all get along really well. My current avatar photo is of my 2nd cat "Q". Check out my photos and you'll see the photos of my first cat "9" and of my last cat "Cookie." Good luck and I applaud your idea of not letting the cat outside, I would be afraid of another cat, or dog fighting with your cat, or worse, a human in a car hurting your pet.

I've always been around cats and have found that ones introduced at a young age tend to get along well. Even with an age difference there is usually tolerance. Cats are adaptable and make the best of most situations. I would certainly have their gearboxes removed what ever the sex, It calms them down. It's good to know that "your" cat owns a caring human, because if you piss him off he can allways dump you and then you'd be sad!

Your cat's energy level is definately based on his age. When I had mine fixed, it didn't seem to make much difference in his personality. Adding a new friend to the home will make a huge difference! Maybe not in how active they are, but when a cat has a companion like another kitty, they seem so much more content.

I too was worried that 'Rocky' was getting bored. So we leave all the shades pulled up and he sits in the window for hours. He is happy sitting in our bar stools looking out the patio door. His favorite thing it to chase the moths that make it into the house.

Thanks for the great advice. I went out shopping today, and stopped by the pet store while I was out... just to look of course. There was this one kitty, she was just adorable, and her eyes said I need a good home.... so I caved in and brought her home :)

Loki is a little pissed about it, he's trying to make sure she knows who runs this place....but I think he will adjust in the long run.

She is 2 months younger than he is, born 6-26-06, while he was born 4-24-06.

I'm not sure what to call her yet... I was going to name her after someone close to the mythological Loki, but the only female name is Sigunn, and I dont like that .

Here is what she looks like:

And here is Loki, if you havent seen him from my blog:

Getting Loki a friend was the wise thing to do, but you may want to rethink having a female. We have 10 little beasties(4 boys,6 girls) and have more jealousy issues and outright bitchery from the girls. All of them are fixed, and the boys tend to me a lot more mellow and much more affectionate. All the same, getting Loki a friend was the right thing to do. He looks like my Spud and your little girl looks like my Sprocket...

Haha, that took them a long time.... I just caught the two cats kissing.
Loki bitched and moaned all day, now he wants to play nice.

Looks like its going to work out ok after all!

we have a min. schauzer and a 2 year old cat. we had a cat that was older that we put down and than bought a kitten who is 15 weeks old now. it took a couple weeks but all the animals play and sleep together. they are all fixed which makes a difference i think. neither of our cats ever went into a heat before they were fixed. our cat that died was a fixed male and i was afraid to mix two females together but it worked out. the male cat started peeing and marking cause he hated the dog-we think. but he had other problems also. anyway, the younger you put your animals together the better. our new kitten loves to play with the dog but our 2 year old cat really isn't interested in him. i would get a 2nd cat now. and don't freak out when they play cause it is crazy!! all the chasing and jumping on each other is so cute.they will probably hiss at each other for a week but after that it should be smooth sailing.

My young cat, Bo, was spoiled from attention by the time we first moved here 2 years ago. She's not one of those "fuck off and leave me alone" cats.

I thought she needed a pet dog ("like Garfield has Odie"), but people said that was crazy.

Eventually one of the stray toms got her knocked up, and her 3 kittens were born spoiled, thanks to Bo's pre-natal diet supplemented by baby formula, and a cozy basket in a quiet, dim corner.

Bo was fixed as soon as was appropriate, 2 of those kittens got new homes, and I'm glad I kept the 3rd, who also got fixed.

The pair get to chase each other, roll around wrestling, groom each other, terrorize small critters together, and aren't as demanding on my time as they would be if alone.
