PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Oscar the cat seems to have an uncanny knack for predicting when nursing home patients are going to die, by curling up next to them during their final hours. His accuracy, observed in 25 cases, has led the staff to call family members once he has chosen someone. It usually means they have less than four hours to live.

The 2-year-old feline was adopted as a kitten and grew up in a third-floor dementia unit at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The facility treats people with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease and other illnesses.

After about six months, the staff noticed Oscar would make his own rounds, just like the doctors and nurses. He'd sniff and observe patients, then sit beside people who would wind up dying in a few hours.

Oscar is better at predicting death than the people who work there, said Dr. Joan Teno of Brown University, who treats patients at the nursing home and is an expert on care for the terminally ill

She was convinced of Oscar's talent when he made his 13th correct call. While observing one patient, Teno said she noticed the woman wasn't eating, was breathing with difficulty and that her legs had a bluish tinge, signs that often mean death is near.

Oscar wouldn't stay inside the room though, so Teno thought his streak was broken. Instead, it turned out the doctor's prediction was roughly 10 hours too early. Sure enough, during the patient's final two hours, nurses told Teno that Oscar joined the woman at her bedside.

This will obviously be made into a movie...but weather it will be Disney or a Sci-Fi original is too early to tell.

Do you suppose this may be working in reverse? Perhaps when the patients notice the cat curling up next to them, they simply give up the effort to stay alive...

This is actually very interesting. I read something a long time ago that some animals can actually "smell" death.

In this case, I'm assuming these people are slowly/gradually dying, it's not something like a sudden heart attack.

If you are in a state of slowly/gradually dying, the body will give off a certain smell that we humans can't really pick up..but apparently animals can.

Perhaps this is an example of what I read years ago.

Well according to that other thread, old people smell like shit. Perhaps the dying smell more like shit than the merely old.

you would think that would flip the residents out. knowing that any day now Oscar is going to come lay by them. i think i would be afraid to touch the thing.

Heh !

Well, that's a good point, too....

I guess some family member wanting old Aunt Gertrude to change the will before she dies could sprinkle some catnip at her feet when she wasn't looking....

"Oh, looky there, Auntie G, here comes ol' Oscar ! ...I'll get a pen and your attorney on the phone ! "

(Gawd, I'm just evil....) ;)

At least a half dozen people are talking about this at work as I type this...

Kinda strange.

The cat is in the dementia ward of the retirement home...so they were saying that often, the residents don't even know that it is there...or they are so far gone memory wise, they don't think anything of it.

Good grief...

He's in the local paper, on the local news and on CNN...

Finally, Britney's pussy can take a back seat....

This news again today.
Oscar is the current animal who does this remarkable feat.
He senses the most seriously ill and singles them out for care.
He is a compassionate cat.
Other cats and dogs have demonstrated this remarkable
ability over the years.
Some of us are like that.
The night my 98 year old grandfather died,
I went to his house that afternoon,
and together we worked in his wood shop.
We talked and then he excused himself early
to go to bed. I knew then that we were
saying goodbye. I believe he did too.
Shep+

I don't see why this isn't possible. There have been several cases of dogs used in cancer diagnosis. Somehow the dog smells the cancer before the patient feels sick or medicine can even see it.

On the other hand, I can see Stephen King making a great story out of this.

I bet some of those old guys would like to have a little pussy come around before they die.

But seriously, Circe Infuria is correct:

VERY interesting, it was just featured on the news!

However Oscar the cat does it, i think it's a good source of comfort that he can bring to the dying. Sure, he is pretty much the grim reaper in a cute furry cat body, but i think that he's bringing comfort and company to those who are about to pass over. I think the dying patient won't feel so lonely, knowing that there's someone there to keep them company during their last moments.
