What difference should it make if they don't want to handle cases with couples of whom they don't approve? Do we really think anyone goes through the Catholic Church who doesn't already agree with their stand? do we really think that the other four dozen agencies handling these matters won't be able to take the other couples?

It would have been easy enough to modify the amendment to say "so long as other agencies are available to handle those cases". Then the Catholics would be on notice that they're not entirely off the hook, but that their consciences are being respected unless necessity strikes. They could also have added that Catholic Charities be required to inform applicants up front of their position.

Indeed! How'd they do it -- is Canada just more tolerant of people having different ways, or did the Catholics decide they could compromise?

It's not really good form to claim that gay folk will be a bad influence on a child when you, yourself can be regularly found hanging out the back of one.
