Is it illegal to go to the public library, rent CDs, and then copy them to my iTunes? I like this because I can get mass music fast since they let you take out up to 100 CDs/items at a time.

Wow! A hundred CDs/items at a time?!

Most of the libraries here in the UK (at least those that I've visited) only allow you about 15/20 items at a time - and usually that's with a maximum of 6 CDs and 6 DVDs, the rest of the allowance covers books/periodicals.

Although I suppose the other thing is that not many people could listen to 100 CDs during the loan period - again very short in the UK: 4 weeks for books and 2 for CDs/DVDs.

I like the more extensive and permissive library system you have in America! :D

Yes that is a violation of the license agreement. Same as if you borrowed a friend's CD and copied the songs from it onto your iPod.

would be perfectly legal in germany :)

why would it be wrong? who cares if its wrong. free music! yay!

*nods*

In Switzerland, it's even legal to download music and movies for personal use, but not software. Only the upload (=public distribution) of any such files is illegal.

I confused as to how anyone can see it as NOT stealing. Copying music or video is no different to taking food off the shelves in a supermarket without paying. Or shoplifting clothes.

Do you imagine all the people who spend their day to make the CD spend all that money and time on performing, producing, distribution, just for their own amusement? Why should you have it for free?

Whatever you do for your job - how about if someone used a machine to replicate whatever you do - and then said: "Now I've got a free duplicate of what you produced, so I'm not paying you for doing it".

if i take something off the shelves and steal it - it is GONE.

if somebody copies music - the physical disc is still there.

that is not fulfilling the definition of theft since the possessor of the object does not change.

yet the MP/RIIA alwasy counts one copy as one lost sale. although reality has shown that this kind of calculation does not work out. if for example a DVD has been copied a 100 times, it does not mean that with copy protection it would have been bought a 100 times more. the real number is more like 5 times more.

still - of course piracy hurts the people who make the music/movies. although it hurts the labels more. but it is not "theft".

and then as a paying customer you are still pestered with shit like this :

I guess one can argue that when rented you are the owner of the CD/DVD at the time and are entitled to make a 'backup' copy.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

So you evidently support Chinese counterfeiting of branded goods. And don't accept patent rights.

counterfeiting and brand is something entirely different, but yeah - the patent system as it is right now is more than flawed. however this is also a completely different topic. but one that is not worth discussing with someone who equates stealing, copying AND counterfeit

So technically yes, it's illegal. So is possessing and using marijuana. That's why no one smokes pot either. Personally, the disgusting amount of money that these bands make gives me no guilt whatsoever if I copy a CD which has already been paid for. How can they justify 15 to 20 bucks for 40 minutes of music which may contain one or two good songs at best.

To be honest these large multi billion dollar companys producing CD's and DVD's make a crap load of cash from other things as well as the sale of the CD's, concerts, royalties, promotion of products as well as other things, If this means they buy one less super car I can sleep at night. I don't advise anyone to break the law and I would never admit to doing it myself but I certainly don't think its wrong. For the amount that is charged I think your bring riped of in the first place, poor people are entilted to some enjoyment as well, or whats the point in living?
