The FCC could allow cell phones and other electronics above 10k feet after announcing that they will consider new rules. Historically the excuse has been interference between phones and plane communications.

However, this has recently been tested on Mythbusters and ultimately busted because newer planes have better shielding.

Interesting, the article above mentions that cell phones are already allowed in some non-US airspaces.

This is actually not a ban imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration. Airlines, however, and some passengers are resistant due to the breach of peace that cell phone use can cause, even though there were some in flight phones built into the backs of some seats in the past.

Should airlines tolerate cell phone use? Or is as bad as a crying baby?

It absolutely should not be allowed. Without doubt many people will talk for the entire trip, and they feel they have to be loud to be heard. I doubt if it will happen, but if it does, I will be reluctant to fly. Hopefully the airlines will prohibit it even if the beaurocrats say yes.

I usually fly Delta, and they have said they will not allow cellphone talking on flights. if they do, I am looking for an airline that DOES NOT ask that I listen to someone talking for an hour or so with dear old Aunt Mildred, or whoever. I sleep on planes and I don't want to listen to some inane conversation somewhere on the plane.

Worse than a crying baby! Unless it's an emergency, you don't need to be talking on your cell phone in mid air. Or standing in line at the post office, or at the supermarket or driving, etc.

Please, NO! It's bad enough on city buses when some phone users make it their mission to make sure the whole bus hears their conversation.

That is the main reason why I stopped riding the bus.

I am all for banning non-sedated babies on planes. Cell phones... calls should definitely be prohibited. Texts would be fine.

No to phones use on planes...i just had to stand in line next to some bitch at Michael's while she discussed her entire travel plans for the next week....and that was only for 5 minutes...would hate to suffer that in an enclosed space with no where to go....one of us wouldn't make it out alive !
