Centrist Republican Calls Obama a "tar baby"

Wait, are you seriously suggesting that someone called Obama a tar baby and didn't mean it in a racist way?!?!?! Oh wow. *reads back on the thread* Yeah, you do think that! It's just so...no polite word comes to mind...that I didn't quite grok it before.

Wow. You're amazing.

But hey, 'cracker' just means someone who cracks. You know, who cracks a whip, to get other people going. I'm sure that's all he meant. :^o

It can be a racist statement, depending on the context in which it is used.

OMG, John Kerry said it too!

I think it's kind of racist, period. Just like calling a black man a tar baby.

BUT I also think that a racist term for the dominant racial group is intrinsically less offensive, because it carries less power and less threat.

Many of my fellow honkies agree with me.

A literary reference that is racially insensitive in the US. The Br'er Rabbit story is part of the Uncle Remus collection (1881) by Joel Chandler Harris. The stories were very popular, but Harris was not immune to prejudice against blacks in his own time (same with the audience)

Some "jokes" are deeply rooted in prejudice and ignorance. Tar baby is not a joke.

Most of us were introduced to the story though Disney's Song of the South. My wife has wanted Disney to release it on home video for years because she just loves the music that was in the movie but it is not going to happen because its now considered 'politically incorrect'. A shame. And to many of us particularly in the South, it is a reference to a sticky problem that traps the unwary person dealing with it.

Perhaps the "Army of Dick" or the Koch brothers could underwrite a high-definition restoration of the following images for the 2012 campaign.

I like the part where the images are interspersed with the image of a chimpanzee! :help: Ah show do luv dat blackbird pie! Doug Lamebrain, eat yo heart out!

The epithet cracker has been applied in a derogatory way, like redneck, to rural, non-elite white southerners, ...

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww Laika,

You think that one of the whitest guys here calling out other white guys for being crackers is racist?

yeah

that would be it.

But you walked right into it. Immediately your outrage surfaces and you are sputtering with indigantion.

And yet you had no problem with tar baby.

Hypocrite.

You used the word as a racial slur. The Congressman however, did not use the word in that context.

It's pitiful to see how some of these right-wing kooks are spinning this story. They're changing the topic, accusing others of racism and defending racist fringe groups. They're either very naive or very stupid. ](*,)

The fact of the matter is that slimy Republican made a racist remark about our President.

There...that's better. Come to think of it, "slimy Republican" could be written as one word! :p

perceived as racist by you

then made over the top by you

more about you then him

looks like the only thing this president has going for him is his ability for his minions to cry racism

sorta deflects his inability to get anything done on the job

keep ranting about the inept wording of a low level republican

if it makes you not think about the real issue which is a lack of leadership in DC

that's not going to suddenly appear

"insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result"

How 'bout "Little Black Sambo"? The story about how de lil black boy got the fearsome tigers to run around in a circle. They be runnin' so fast, they be turned into tiger butter, and Little Black Sambo prevailed. Oh, wait... the tiger butter contained too much cholesterol. Never mind. !oops!

Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away, there were two guys - Sam and Bob who decided to go into the restaurant business. They named their restaurants "Sambo's". Get it? Sam and Bob. They were forced to change the restaurant name because it had racial overtones. My, how things have changed!

it was racist

Stop defending the garbage, chance.

i'm not defending it

said the guy was somewhere between stupid and a racist

he's one guy BP

You wouldn't know a THING about it would you?

Dude

get real

This is not the 1900's anymore and its not OK to dwell in the vatt of disgusting racism that was once tolerated in this nation.

This guy needs to be exposed for who he is and what he represents... white fear and retribution for losing an election to a black guy.

AWWWE

booboo needs a bandaid for his Boo BOO? please. this guy is fucking flthy and he exposes the lot of them for what they are... so addicted to the language of racism that they and their followers don't even flinch.

Or try the Laika gambit where you make it about a poster's comment instead of th conservative politician's comment.

That way, his own defense of the use of this racist term might be overlooked.

BTW..You'd think that after McCain and Romney were on record as apologizing....the penny might drop that you just don't use this term when you have a black president in the White House.

It would be like greeting Obama and saying 'Gee, haven't seen you in a coon's age.'

I worked with an older lady sometime ago, and during that time I had a verbal confrontation with a co-worker. The lady I mentioned agreed with me about my opponent but cautioned me about the argument. She said "Words are like the feathers in a pillow. If you cut the pillow open and shake the feathers out, odds are you'll never get them all back in. Even if you should, they will never be the same".

Most of the American public knows a racial slur when they hear one. Perhaps "tar baby" was meant to mean entrapped, but collectively with "Barak the Magic Negro" and other "cutesy" bullshit we have heard can only be interpreted as purely racist.

The pilow story I mentioned above reminds me of Michel Bachman's remark about black children being better off during slavery because they had both parents. She later retracted it, but "the feathers were out". It also clearly evidenced her complete ignorance of our history. Old Massa could and did break up families at anytime and sell them to the highest bidder. Slaves were selectively bred to obtain stronger and more docile children (reminiscent of Hitler's pure Aryan concepts?).

How many racist remarks are black people expected to let slide from our leaders and potential leaders, before they have had enough?.

That's what he's doing, defending this shit and telling everyone who doesn't agree with him they're wrong. But he does that in every thread so it's expected.

And (as usual) making a fool of himself with his choppy little writing style.

(Can you imagine what he's like in real life?! )
