I'm not sure of the validity of this little tidbit of information. I remember either reading it or hearing about it many years ago, so it's all memory.
Charles is a little man who, at the time of the murders, was very slim. When the FBI moved in to arrest him and his 'Family', Charles wasn't anywhere to be found despite an extremely thorough search. At least they looked in places where the figured someone of Charles' stature could hide.
He almost escaped capture until one of the detectives decided it was not a proper search if they didn't look everywhere else.
They found Charles folded up and squeezed into a tiny cupboard which had a door only about 1 foot square.
That always amazed me.
