How sad. :(

Back during the 'Match Game' years in the 70's and 80's, he reassured me that I wasn't alone, and that there were others like me.

May he rest in peace.

He was always the star of the show, on Match Game as well as Hollywood Squares. Scary thing for me is he was born the same year as my Dad, 1931, which reminds me of the inevitable, not pleasant, but reality sucks sometimes.
RIP Charles, and thanks:cry:

I felt very sad when I heard this on the radio this morning. I don't have television or cable, but I hope the news gave homage to him as an actor of stage and screen as well as the game shows.
He was great and very funny.

My sadness only grows.
I *hate* losing people just like me. :(

*Sigh*

Give me a little time and I'll be back to 'Joshy'...

I heard Charles Nelson Reilly had died this morning on NPR. I loved watching him on Match Game in the 70s ... he had so much charisma and such acerbic humor ... totally himself, in public, through and through. RIP, Charles, you meant more to me as a 9-year-old misfit than you'll ever know.

How sad!

I too mourn the death of CNR, for like Joshy said, he represented ALL that was gay on TV, for he was an in-your-face-funny-gay-man! He was the "Here I Am, Gay, take me or leave me; but dammit here I am"!!!

He apologized for NO one and he was a funny-funny man who stole the show!

It's people like CNR who make changes, valuable, life-altering changes so that the rest of us can live a more civil, peaceful, life as Gay men and women in this world.

Rest in peace....(*8*) (*8*)

Loved the guy, what a funny and sweet man he was!He was an outstanding performer as his two Tonys would attest....but I really admired his ability as an actor when a few years back he did guest appearances on The X-Files and the underrated Millenium as famed writer and cynic Jose Chung, with performances so poignant, outrageously funny, and richly layered. He was more than that hysterically outrageous gay comic on Match Game.It seems he should have gotten the oportunity to do much more with his career....his talents were so good that it's a shame he was too stereotyped by the game show rep to be seriously considered for more roles worthy of those talents. One of the great gay icons we've ever had, because he was so comfortable with himself and having fun being himself.

BTW,am I correct to remember Alec Baldwin doing an incredible Charles Nelson Reilly impersonation on Saturday Night Live?Hysterical from what I remember.

Yes you are.

It was 'dead on' without being insulting. I'm sure it's floating around YouTube
somewhere.....I'm just kinda busy at the moment. ;)

Yeah,

I suspect he 'spoke' to a lot of us gay men coming up in the 70's and 80's...

Once again... may he rest in peace.

I was just a little shit when he was on Match Game and I don't think I really understood at the time that he was gay. I just knew he was hilarious and I liked him. I knew there was something about his humor that really appealed to me. Must be why I like people who can pull off the dry acerbic wit. Just cracks me up.

He was a funny and brave man. :=D:

I first saw him in the original production of "Hello Dolly" with Carol Channing. He played Cornelius Hackle and stole the show. I met him in a DC gay bar in the mid-70's. Just stopped by him for a second to tell him how much I enjoyed him in Dolly. He was pleasant, but not really friendly. (Actors must get really sick of fans in public places.) Loved Match Game, but he always seemed half-drunk. Supposedly alcohol flowed pretty freely between tapings. He gave a super performance on an episode of The X-Files. I think he won an Emmy for that.

Yeah I supposed he probably wanted to just go out without someone noticing him or something like that.

He was very talented, a gay pioneer and a very quick wit.
But Boy, did he disprove the myth that all gay men have a fashion sense. Some of the stuff he put together was terrible.
He was unique and will be missed by many.

Actually, he was standing right in the middle of the bar with a friend, where he could be plainly seen. (All actors love to be looked at.) He just didn't want people coming up to him. (The funny thing was, when I mentioned to a bunch of other people he was there, none of them knew who he was. LOL)

Wow, that's right !!

How the F did I forget about that !

He was, in addition to being 'a funny man' a very talented actor.

That was a *great* episode of 'The X-Files'.

Frankly, I'm a little surprised with myself of how much his death is affecting me.
I guess he was a little more important to me than I realized.

Hmm.
