Child sex abuse claims mount against Boy Scouts

Repugnant.

Now watch the right-wing conservatives clamp onto this story and use it to demonize gay men.

Here we go again!

Riddle of the Day:
Q: What is a scoutmaster?
A: A pedophile that doesn't want to become a priest.
The "moral high horse" riders strike again!

This is very disappointing to hear. On the other hand, I enjoyed my time as a Cub Scout & later as a Boy Scout. I learned a lot of useful life & survival skills that would have been hard to gain elsewhere. I learned how to use power tools to make crafts, I learned how to tie 20 different kinds of knots, I learned how to go camping, backpacking, canoeing, and scuba diving, and I learned first aid. It was a memorable time in my life, as a Boy Scout. It was nice to be in a place where God & country were placed in such high regard.

My first crush as a teenage boy was on my Scoutmaster. He was the local Captain of the Fire Department in our neighborhood. He was this handsome, manly, well-built, athletic, sturdy man in his early 40s, who was at least 6 feet tall and 200 pounds. I was so in awe of him.

I wish I could go camping with him again. But this time, we would sleep in the same sleeping bag......... :sex:

Just for grins and giggles, JayQueer, do suppose you could try and address the topic at hand and not make every thread about you? Just something different, that's all I'm saying.

This.

Thank you.

As an ex-Scoutmaster I am offended by this. Most Scoutmasters are good honest people trying to help young men grow. The same can be said of priests.

Don't be offended. The only ones we ever hear about are the rotten apples. They ruin it for the folks who are doing good work. Of course, what follows is the story of the cover-up. That's life in the big city.

The truly sad thing about the Scouts' organization efforts to deal with abuse is the disorganized, unpredictable, undependable fashion in which it has been done. In Oregon, there have been adults barred from volunteering on the basis of mere accusations, and the names not removed when the accusations were found empty, while at the same time men who had actually been convicted of abuse were allowed to return to Scout work. In some places, mere allegations could get someone booted, while in others being caught practically in a sleeping bag with a boy would merely get you moved to a different troop to work with.

They'd be a lot more credible if they had something other than a makeshift, half-assed botch job.

Thanks for being a Scoutmaster. I learned a lot from the Boy Scouts, and I think that its' a good impact on many boys & young men's lives.

I don't support the Boy Scouts anymore as an organization because I know I would not be allowed to volunteer or be a mentor, because I am a gay man.

However, I hope that they drop their ban on gay men & boys.

Because there is no reason why a boy, who happens to be gay or questioning, should not be able to learn how to go camping, fishing, scuba diving, or how to tie knots & do the Heimlich maneuver.

So long as the Mormons are a major force in Scouting in the U.S., that isn't going to happen.

When I left the standard requirement was to pass a background check and required training program. Many of the local units were also requiring some sort of sponsorship or other connection to scouting (parents, former scouts, etc.), you couldn't just walk in off the street and ask to be Scout Master, you would be immediately suspect.

Hopefully some prosecutions and investigations will take place.

They're not the Catholic Church so they can't hide behind religion.

I think the inclusion of religion in the Boy Scouts is a GOOD THING ..|

Through the most difficult times in life, it is my faith in the Lord that gets me through. I know God has a plan for me.

I strongly believe in God, and I know that a lot of gay people also believe in God and are religious too.
