when I saw titanic in the theaters it was a love story, 20 years later as an adult its a gross indictment of classism, abusive relationships and the absolute unsustainability of systems that allow wealth. The chaos loading the lifeboats, the determination that rich people deserved to live, the ease with which the underclass was thrown under the bus, the fact that its fiction is hardly comforting because in times of a real crisis we know it will play out the exact same way.

Killer soundtrack though, celines power ballad is the best thing about that movie, that and Kate Winslet's hair color. Oh and my husband Billy zane.

Same thoughts crossed my mind, the phrases "old money and new money" stuck out also.

Well I don't go around angry all the time about everything. Sometimes I just enjoy life and movies and how hot Leo was.

In the Bible the King of Israel is supposed to be above Priests. The conservative priests didn't like that and rebelled and it lead to the destruction of the Kingdom of Israel.

Well I don't go around angry

Neither do I, despite what racist propaganda about blood-hungry feral angry black men may tell you.

I enjoy life and my passion is for others to be able to do so as well, because people who are TRULY happy usually make it their mission to spread that joy to others, and passionately fight against cultures that hinder this possibility. Its called not being a selfish dick.

Na Black men are usually pretty chill, Black women on the other hand at least the ones in my family. My sister and her daughters are all bipolar narcissists just like my white birth mother my sister's mom. My bad I thought you were a Black Woman

I honestly was never given to any illusions about the whole thing with Titanic. I went to see it with my cousins when it was in theaters and was appalled even then at the way things were depicted. It literally screamed classism, misogyny, and arrogance throughout the entire movie.

There are other things though, about my childhood, that really do scream out to me now in a lot of different ways. It's sad when the things you may have loved as a child are finally shown to be corrupt once you are older.

Thank you for listening, being aware doesn't make somebody angry just makes them an adult. Grown ass adults shouldn't look at the world through a Disney fairytale lens.

Very true. Doing so can be a real danger when it comes to realistic approximations of the situations we find ourselves in.

I agree with you and it still amazes me how easily I fell for it all back in 1997. Seems like a lifetime ago!

Here's one that puzzled me as a child.

As a family, we watched "The Bugs Bunny Show" on primetime TV in 1960.
I thought cartoons were for little kids, like me, but I'll never forget how my mom and dad just cracked-up at Pepe Le Pew shorts.

They were rolling on the floor and I was completely mystified . . . what was so funny?

Now I bust out laughing at Pepe Le Pew! The bad English, the awful French, the sly commentaries, the "eye contact" with the audience; this is amazing for a cartoon.

Edd mentioned pepe lepew, great example. As a kid it cracked me up, overzealous admirer can't take no for an answer, almost romantic, now at best its an adult humor we don't deserve til we reign in the whole #metoo thing.

I know that makes me an oversensitive crybaby millennial feminist snowflake SJW that wouldn't survive 2 seconds in 1955 (even if I were white), but as someone who has dealt personally with over 200 sex assault victims including multiple family members, its an important cause to me and definitely a movement we shouldn't dismiss.

And for sure only our enlightened descendants will understand the profound psycho-social (trademark oending) influence of being desensitized to these images so early, especially as we are only now discovering that much of the borderline and overt sexualization all up and through our art and media was deliberate as fuck. Pervs sneaking sex into... everything, especially kids cartoons.

Like that Nickelodeon guy who was into kid foot porn and has a whole reel of work he'd ?directed? That has images of kid feet, even on his social media he had a "submit your silly feet pic" contest for the kids. Yeah let's start unpacking ALL OF THAT. I can't imagine anyone but a perv or a sex offender would have a problem with us scrubbing all this shit from our collective conscious.

You know, out of all the Looney Tunes cartoons that's the one I really just never found all that entertaining, but then I was far more a fan of Hannah Barbara. I wonder what cringe inducing stuff I'd find if I ever went back to watch that stuff again.

But yeah, the stuff surrounding all of that sexualization, it needs to be addressed. Do I think it's an absolutely imperative thing, no not really. The cartoons we are talking most about really aren't even played much anymore. But it's something we should probably at least watch as we move forward to make sure inappropriate stuff like that isn't still being put into cartoons.

At the same time I think we need to really examine where it's coming from as well. Just like violence in video games has absolutely no correlation with violent behavior in the people who play them, I don't think the behavior in cartoons is what is likely to cause that same behavior in children. Art mimics life, not the other way around. We need to find out what is making people think it's okay in the first place, and work to reign that in.

I dunno, that probably came across as rambling, but yeah, that's my take on it.

I didn't realize just how overtly racist Loony Tunes were when I was a kid, but seeing them through adult eyes boy everyone got hit with the racism stick! The ironic thing is that I knew that Ton N Jerry having a mammy was just awful but Loony Tunes didn't hit me the same way back then.

I had totally forgotten about that! They sure did have a Mammy! Holy crap!

The only Looney Tunes I really ever followed was Coyote and Road Runner, and Duck Dodgers and Marvin the Martian. The rest I didn't really care for.

I see where you're going, and at the risk of sounding like I'm shirking personal responsibility, I think maybe we underscore if these media (mediums?) can influence behavior, if not for stable people, certainly for people with fragmented psyches that are susceptible to manipulation of influence, which is a considerable percentage.

Even before I knew those mammy images were racist, I knew they were racist. It felt sooooo wrong looking at those exaggerated characters and I knew it wasn't just happenstance cartoonists taking liberties for liberty's sake.

Perhaps, for the percentage with fragmented psyches, but then I don't think it's necessarily the media they are consuming that is really to blame even then. It is the underlying mental instability. They would likely have still acted out in unpredictable ways, even without the behavior being shown to them. We have a long history of people with mental instability doing horrid things, well before such things as television ever even became a thing. Look at Jack the Ripper. He existed in a world without such things, and in a world where fiction wasn't really even permitted to really address such things in anywhere near the level it would have taken to inspire his crimes, and yet he viscously murdered all those women nonetheless.

I was nine years old when Lou Reed's "Transformer" came out. The album artwork fascinated me. When my brother saw it in my room he said "You better not let mom know you have this". That's when I knew it was good, although at the time it seemed perfectly innocent to me. As far as I knew, "Perfect Day" was about a guy with a mean girlfriend and "Make Up" was about a pretty girl.

I'm sorry, but what? I don't think I quite understand the point you are trying to make.

Its quite clear, from pro western to pro fairness in geo politics.
The political systems are just the names to divide people like ''capitalist or communist''
