Childhood stuff that takes on a whole new meaning as an adult

That's cute, but no. Try again next time. I for one won't really be interacting with your pet conspiracy theories or wild ramblings.

Even before I knew those mammy images were racist, I knew they were racist. It felt sooooo wrong looking at those exaggerated characters and I knew it wasn't just happenstance cartoonists taking liberties for liberty's sake.

My grandma had a mammy cookie jar, and she taught me all about the imagery and how we used to be depicted, so I knew that mess was wrong. Her shuffling along in her house shoes whistling, with all those skirts and stuff anytime she saw Jerry and jumped in the chair. So racist!

On a side not does anyone remember the episode where Jerry becomes "invisible" and tortures Tom. The only way he could become visible again was from drinking chocolate milk. Wonder what the producers were going for there. ;)

Pledge of Allegiance seemed normal every day before school, now that I got older it just comes off as indoctrination and subjection to the state.

The christian church.

Oh. My. God. Why didn't I think of that! Holy crap that's a good response. I was so involved with the church I grew up in as a child, but as I got older realized how toxic and destructive it was!

Getting a good hard ass licking.

Adults. As a child, I thought adulthood automatically made you wise and sensible.

@fab I've never seen Titanic, but I take it that Kate is rich and Leo is poor and she survives and he doesn't. I've seen a pic of the other guy--your husband--looking smashing in a dinner jacket so I take it he's rich. But does he die? As you may know if you know much about the actual disaster, while persons in steerage died in immensely greater numbers than those on the upper decks, a great many rich people died as well, particularly rich men--and more than a few famously rich men, to the degree that many of the rich men who survived were ostracized afterwards. Come the revolution there are still going to be people who have more privilege than others and you'd better believe their privilege will not be based on virtue. I don't think there's a moral to the story, but there is a lesson: all things being equal, it's better to be rich than poor, even if you've got a better chance of surviving a plane crash by sitting in the back of the plane in Economy than in the front in First Class.

Just how unspeakably filthy some of the songs from the 70's were when you read between the lines. :p

Pedophilia was freely expressed in some pop and rock songs. Like Doug Fieger describing his erection to an underage girl in My Sharona. That song had a huge AM rotation.

You mean how no one batted an eye at Benny Mardones in 1980 when he took Into the Night into the top 10? The lyrics clearly state that "she's just 16, leave her alone", but I guess back then it was cool. Even though the song is kinda creepy from today's context he sang the hell out of it though!

Being indoctrinated into the WW2 fantasy until in my early 20s once I started to do my own research, read books, etc. Really ticks me off. Thankfully I'm much better informed about history and politics. It was done inadequately at school and the prevailing myths, or lies rather, persist so it irritates me I swallowed them. For those interested, read The Phoney Victory by Peter Hitchens; https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/1350156337/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_1?smid=ANEGB3WVEVKZB&psc=1

As a kid I thought Adam Sandler was funny.

Now I realize his movies are shitty af.

I was probably like 40 when most of these things occurred.
