Children in US gay and lesbian families more likely to live in poverty: Study

Ugh! I'm sick of hearing "gay families". Families aren't gay, individuals are. We don't say "straight families".

A family is a family.

"Families where the parents are in a gay relationship" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Who cares how it sounds?
Calling a family a gay family is just not accurate.

Apart from the couples who bring biological children to the relationship, I can't see how a couple that actually adopted could be living in poverty and still afford adoption costs.

What became of gays having more expendable income?

Traditionally, gay people had more expendable income because they didn't have children to care for.

Now that the demographics are changing, the idea that gays are automatically more affluent will be challenged.

I'll still wager than many more lesbians are out there raising children than gay men are. And that factoid has all sorts of ramifications in this alleged trend.

Namely the income inequality between men and women in general. Two women are going to make less money than two men.

- Cannot claim a $6,000 child care tax credit and other child-related deductions and credits.

- Spends an extra $3,105 per year having to purchase private health insurance due to being denied employer-sponsored health insurance. If they don't, they could face enormous medical costs if an ineligible family member falls ill.

- Pays $2,215 a year more in taxes.

- If one spouse dies, the family could lose $27,936 in annual Social Security survivor benefits.

I believe that you are wrong with the first two and at least partially wrong with the third one.

The child care tax deduction applies to anyone, whether married, single, widowed or divorced. Since most states don't recognize gay marriage, one gay partner would take the tax break, usually the one making the lesser salary.

Can you name me one American employer that you know for certain denies medical insurance to parents of adopted children just because the parent is gay? Adoption makes the child and parent a legal family, therefore making it illegal to deny coverage based on this, if the company is providing coverage for all other employess.

In the event of the death of one partner, SS is denied to the other, but not to the children. Children up to 18 (and longer if the child is in college) receive SS benefits from the deceased partners benefits. Again, adoption makes this the law.

Much of this has to do with Federal laws, of course. State laws will vary from state to state. In most states, I suspect only one partner can be the legal parent.

There is no doubt that it is more costly in every way to be a gay couple with children. Hopefully, one day things will be fair and equal for everyone.
