"Christians" want to burn book

ok, lets see...a group of christian "senior citizens" are putting forth this lawsuit to burn this book and also get compensated for damages ? What the hell were they doing reading this book anyway? I bet one of them found one of their grandkids reading it and blew a gasket and called a church meeting and then............

lol we're in 2009 and they still wanna "burn" books. how about not buying them/reading them?

We shall overcome,
We shall overcome,
We shall overcome,
Some dayayayayyy.

Sing it with me.
The power of love is greater than the power of hate.
Mahatmas Ghandi (SP?) proved that a long time ago.

As did a certain other poor peasant lad, who wandered the country side with his friends.
What was His name?
Oh, yeah, Jesus Christ!

Was one Helluva Radical thinker, the last I knew.

I would like to say, as a Pagan for many years, that I'm disturbed by people using the term 'Christian' as if it only meant these people. They are not representative of the religion (well, no one is really). Can't we call this category "Christian Dominionists," or just "fascist assholes," or something?

I know a lot of people on here think all Christians are bad people, or like to talk as if they are, but it's not the case. Let's not let the Dominionists decide what the word 'Christian' will mean.

I'll call them what they call themselves.

Even though they're trying to claim a label that's broader than the community they actually represent? Did you call the Moral Majority the label they prefer? (Or do you remember that?)

There's an organization that calls itself Fox News. The right-wing loonies call themselves "the American People." I don't think self-identification is the best criterion.

What would you call self-described Jews? Self-described Muslims? Self-described Buddhists?

Any Christians who disagree, especially vehemently, with the the actions of other Christians, almost invariably insist that the others aren't "real" Christians at all. You'd make a bundle if you bet on it. They all end up pointing at each other, with the shrillest Christians believing they proved it.

The title of this thread is a case in point.

Well, the title is in quotes.

But I'm not saying they're not entitled to the label. I'm saying that the term is too broad. It's like saying "white guys shoot museum guards in DC."

Chriostoir,
Thank you, for echoing what I said early.
And, the OP wisely named this thread "Christians" want to . . .

He did NOT say Christians want to . . .

There IS a world of difference -- And they are of many different Christian denominations. I would venture so far as to say that some of my dearest friends might, unfortunately, view the other's religion as suspect - I know one, a very dear, loving lady, who still holds the view that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (The Mormons), is a cult, not a true religion.

I suppose, as a Roman Catholic, I "should" hold the same opine. As I have posted elsewhere, I don't. Some of the nicest people I know are Mormon.

I try not to generalize.

I wonder what she'd have to say about Wicca!

I think LDS is a real religion (the term 'true religion' makes me twitch); it's just not particularly a form of Christianity as the term is normally thought of. I've even heard some Mormons say so.

And it's important to distinguish between a religion and the organization that administers that religion. I know lots of nice Catholics, and you say you know lots of nice Mormons. That doesn't change the fact that both the RCC and the CJCLDS are massively corrupt organizations that do enormous evil in the world.

She's not a big fan of Wicca, either, LOL.
She knows we enjoy Harry Potter, but won't go near it.

I know that there are parts of the Church that have issues, yes. Do I think they do more evil than good? Probably not.

But, my diocese is one of the more progressive in the world. I'm not looking forward to 3 years from now when our good bishop reaches mandatory retirement age.

^ That was my thought as well. While they're at it, why don't they go after Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn? Or how about To Kill a Mockingbird or The Color Purple?

From what I've seen, Jane Austen can get quite out of hand, too!

Then there's that pervert, Shakespeare - I mean, Kiss me Kate and A Midsummernight's Dream - REALLY!

I say LET "EM have their book burning party.

You know what will happen? It'll give the book far more publicity than anything else could have, and people will buy the book just to see what all the fuss is about.

A best-seller!

It is already a best seller. It's been out since 2003, and while controversial in many school and public libraries, it has also been reviewed very well. From Amazon, the concluding review which describes a boy's dreams as he recovers from being gay bashed in the park:

Out of her comforting words about how others in his family have insisted on being themselves, his battered brain fashions hopeful hallucinations, including one of his future lover. His visions assure him that "There was love waiting; love would come."

Block writes distinctively and convincingly, interweaving the hallucination scenes smoothly. She makes the power of stories felt?and here, more purposefully than ever before, she weaves a safety net of words for readers longing to feel at home with themselves.

Gay teens in particular need this book. All fans of the series will relish meeting nice-guy Dirk as the tender Baby Be-Bop.?Claudia Morrow, Berkeley Public Library, CA

This reminds me of the story of the lady who complains to the police that a certain boy is always walking by her house whistling dirty songs.

Reminds me of a news piece that I saw on T. V. years back: A christian group was burning Harry Potter books under the terms that it taught three different kinds of "witch-craft" that was condemned in the bible. :roll eyes:

I didn't read Harry Potter at the time, but when I saw those books being burned, I received a heart attack. :(

Wouldn't they have to buy the books first before burning it? Or massively steal it?

No. The books they're talking about are in libraries. Apparently they can corrupt people simply by being placed on the shelves.

Create a Christian Friendly library, or at least expand the ones they have in church.... it takes away the evolution books as well. It's so easy, why waste the time just to petition for the right to burn it when one can send their kids to their church's libraries.

They know they lose society that way. They don't just want to keep it from THEIR kids, they want to make sure no one else's kids can have it either. That's what makes them fundamentally anti-American.
