Christopher Hitchens slams Jerry Falwell

So if it was good enough for Falwell it's good enough for Hitchens and the rest of you? If I were you all, I'd want to think that I was better than someone I reviled, such as Falwell. However, it seems like there is no such worry here. I'm just surprised at how many of you seem to be okay with being on par with Falwell. Kind of ironic, but I suppose not surprising.

And, of course, Mow sets himself so-far superior to everyone else. Wonder what he'd have to say if William Jefferson Clinton were to (God forbid) die?

Christopher Hitchens is one of my personal heroes, along with Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris and Madeline Murray O'Hare -- people who fight for reason and truth and TRUE morality in the face of charlatans, bigots and hypocrites like Falwell and his ilk who hide behind the veil of religion like the lowly cowards that they are in order to lend legitimacy and credibility to the profound evil and poison they spread throughout the world.

Falwell is one of the most despicable pieces of trash to ever walk this planet, and deserves not an ounce of respect from anyone -- only vociferous and loudly spoken condemnation. They should have hung his rotting corpse in a public forum to be spit on and degraded like the slimy filth that he is. He ranks up there with Hitler and Mussolini as one of the most evil men in history. The human race should be utterly ashamed of itself for being so stupid and gullible as to give this fuckface an iota of credibility. Good riddance to that worthless piece of garbage. The world is a much better place without him in it.

I don't agree with mowrest's politics, but he is correct about the "apologist" accusation. An agologist is one who speaks or writes in support of a specific ideology/ theory/etc. in order to convince others of it's truth. He is not trying to be an apologist for Falwell. He is an apologist for not excoriating someone who's just died. I'm not saying I necessarily agree with him about that, but he's not being an apologist for Falwell's viewpoints, just because he doesn't think people should be so vindictive this soon after his death.

Gotta agree with Mowrest and by the way ,what a chest! Nice little rhyme, ehh? Anyway , back to topic. I like Christopher Hitchins too he's a bit arrogant but well spoken and I like that dry British humor he has. I didn't agree with his support of the Iraq war nor his conservative views. His book on Jefferson was critiqued as perhaps one of the best written on Jefferson. I'll get around to reading it I'm sure. I was wondering if you have ever listened to JF in an interview Dry Ice? NPR played an interview Terry Gross (one of the best interviewers around IMO) and he doesn't come off as wacko as your impression of him seems. Don't misintrepret this as support for him but I believe we must give each other as human beings a degree of respect if we ourselves are wanting the same. I think his Tinky Winkey comments and there are other comments as well, put the nail in his credibility coffin so to speak long ago.

In the most recent edition of Hannity & Combes (sp?) Hitchens said:

"If you gave Jerry Falwell an enema, you could bury him in a matchbox."

Hannity was not too pleased with Hitchens for the thing he said about the "good reverend", and he referred to Falwell with things like"fine man".

Comedy gold!

Here is a clip of the interview:

So I got lazy and didn't read everyone's comments. Here is the thing...

I think we can all agree that Fallwell had some definite flaws, to say the least. This Atheist guy is alo wrong in bashing him. Religion is not stupid, but Fallwell was crazy (IMOHO).

Bottom line: Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right. (But they do make us feel better!)

I'm not sure if you "think we can all agree" on all of that or just the part that Falwell had "definite flaws", but, just in case, I will come out and say that I utterly disagree about religion not being stupid; it is (IMOHO).

Since I'm sure you'll be getting some flak for that statement, ICO7, I will come out and unapologetically agree with you on that -- in my not so humble opinion.

a "bit arrogant" ? that's like saying Alfie is a "bit liberal"

Hitchens is what he is - an egomaniacal, opinionated, interesting author/commentator - and he is a "bit" of a flip flopper too

as for Falwell - enough already - the guy is dead - no need to dance on his grave - if asked, do tell - but there's no point really in fucking a dead guy right?

Actually there is .... look how many books were written about Adolph Hitler. To the modern gay community, there is little difference between the two. Personally, he never shot any of us, but he was the indirect cause of many deaths. IMO, his demise doesn't relieve him of that responsibility!

hear you

not sure about the indirect cause part

and I think books make sense

but the vitriol seems a bit much

not sure what is to be gained by excoriating him

How about AIDS, how long did it take the government (read Ronald Reagan) to get its ass in gear to fund research. Reagan owed his Presidency to the Moral Majority, an organization created by Falwell after Roe v Wade was passed.

How about gay bashing by followers of the Falwell condemnation of gays. And what about the suicides of gays who hated themselves because they couldn't change and Falwell said they would go straight to hell!

'Indirect cause' is probably too kind of a phrase to apply to Jerry Falwell's involvement in the deaths of gays.

OK

When I watch Falwell I always thought he was nuts - he never made me think he was right

But I get ur point

It seems most everybody is "busy". Not surprising.
President Bush does not plan to attend, but the White House is sending Tim Goeglein, a mid-level aide.
Who the hell is Goeglein?

attending Falwell's funeral would not be the smart thing to do
