The man's mother, Julie Atwood, was told that holding the funeral at the christian church would be 'blasphemous' — and the family was sent packing, she says.

'I did feel like he was being denied the dignity of death,' Atwood told WFLA. 'It was devastating.'
Dear Julion,
You're in a better place. :-)

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

The Value of a Friend

9
Two are better than one,
Because they have a good reward for their labor.

10
For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.
But woe to him who is alone when he falls,
For he has no one to help him up.

11
Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm;
But how can one be warm alone?

12
Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.
And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

So called Christians one hour each Sunday the rest of time they practice bigotry, hate and intolerance.

What is the family supposed to do? Throw his body in a dumpster? Fuck.

There is nothing Christian about this and the Church Elders and Pastor should be ashamed of themselves. They need to spend some time meditating on the meaning of 'hate the sin but love the sinner.'

A very large bulldozer will take care of that church quite nicely.

Even using the word 'church' to speak about those morons sounds already blasphemous.

Sorry for you, for your widower, for your family and for your friends, Julion.
R.I.P.

It would have been so easy for the pastor to have found a different venue for them and arranged for its use, rather than just slamming the door. Given their doctrinal position, I wouldn't expect him to actually conduct a funeral, but with a pastor's connections, he could have found someone who could, and covered any difference in expense himself.

Jesus told His disciples, "Freely you have received; freely give." Where was that giving?

it sounds like they're an outspoken anti-gay Baptist Church... was the guy even a member of the congregation? seems weird that they'd even want to have his funeral there in the first place.

The surviving husband said this was his church, so that must mean he was not out at his church and he would have known the stance of the church on the issues of gays in the church.

As a Christian, raised in the conservative church, I have always known what they believed about homosexuality. I belonged to a church for a long time that I had been involved with in the food shelf and library programs. Before we had children, the church thought Tomas and I were just friends. It was the only place we were not out. Tomas didn't like it, but I knew I would not be allowed to be involved in the programs I was because of our relationship. So, he went along with it. When we had kids, I knew I had to say something. I met with the pastor, a man in his sixties, who was very understanding. He told me that he loved me but could not agree with homosexuality. He was upfront about it and felt because of my involvement in the church, he would have to inform the board. When he did, I was told I would be removed from the programs I worked with. We were still welcome to attend, they said, but not anything more than that. Within two weeks, they asked us not to even attend. Our presence was disturbing because so many people knew us and liked us. We were a disruption. I guess if we had been strangers, it might have been different?
To say I was crushed would be an understatement. I had to stop three times on the way home to bawl my eyes out. Tomas was furious and wanted to make an issue. I talked him out of it because I knew it would do no good. I knew the church. He had grown up in the Greek orthodox church where people generally don't make an issue about things.
I can't say I ever gave thought to being buried at that church, but I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt marriage would never happen there, so a funeral would not be any different.

I tell this about my life only because the surviving husband said this was his church. so he knew what they believed. I agree with him that the real issue was not that they wouldn't hold the funeral there, but that they did it at the last minute..

My heart goes out to him, I can only imagine how painful this is on top of his great loss.

I have to say that while I find that pretty offensive, people do have a right to their religious bigotries in their own bigoted churches.

Sixthson, the issues are both. It is low even for the bigots not even to hold a funeral, like he wasn't even human. I'm glad this story was splashed all over the news for the world to see what heartless barbarians they are.

I am as well. If nothing else, it shows Christian hypocrisy of "love" once again.

No church will hold a funeral for someone they won't say is going to heaven. The heartless part is that the pastor just cut them off, offering no help at all. It reminds me of an old (bad) joke*, where a Samaritan comes to Jesus and says, "If You will, You can heal me!", and Jesus says, "I will not! I will not! Get thee hence to Caesar's free clinic!"

*it's a piece from an alleged manuscript of "The Gospel According to St. Pontius".

The Christian Right these days would have crucified him.

As a matter of fact, if I remember my Sunday School correctly, their equivalent did crucify him.

I don't know why people are surprised by the poor behaviour of the organizations they choose to support, when those organizations make no secret of their views.
