Cindy McCain endorse gay marriage movement

I would love it if we could find a way to not make it a conservative/liberal issue. I have friends that are Republicans that support marriage equality and they do not feel that it should be a party issue. We would be more successful once we can do this. I'm hoping that the Replublican party will at least remove the issue from their platform so that more Replublicans will feel it is ok to support equality.

I was trying to figure out a way to do this. It might help if a group of Republicans got together to create a new organization for Progressive Republicans within the Republican party that openly supports marriage equality.

hmmm.....that maybe a grassroots attempt is already happening....

At this point, I don't really care who does what - Republican, Democrat, or whatever. But I don't see anyone doing much. And with each new pressing issue - the economy, unemployment, the wars in Iran and Afghanistan, heath care reform, homeland security, Haiti, illegal immigration, swine flu, etc, etc, etc, - gay rights and gay marriage are becoming more lost and forgotten among all the other clutter.

Well we know her husband (Obama) is against gay marriage, he has the same opinion of gay marriage as Carrie Prejean, and he's the head of the Democratic Party.

Gay marriage I don't think really is a political issue as much as a generational issue. The old ones will die off and the young ones will change things.

I know.

Also, I have a hunch that at least one of the Bush twins is privately pro gay rights also.

Lets be honest Rich people are more likely to be pro gay marriage, specially if they come from old money/political families (and no the Palins are noveau riche).

Nice she came out but the facts remain the Republican Party is not tolerant and open to gays. They may give lip service but the actions of the party and its leaders is anti gay. As long they maintain ties with the religious right they will continue to be anti gay.

Will Sarah Palin still campaign for McCain this fall?

I'm so sick of seeing posts about this with all you silly homos out there celebrating in the streets about some meaningless twitty glamour shots. This means nothing other than some rich old bitch trying to see if she can fool a few of you people into voting for her homophobic husband since he's in a bit of a close one this year.

I'm sure a bunch of people will happily vote for him thinking that they're voting for an ally. And then he'll continue to support every anti-gay law he can find to sign.

If that old hag really believed in gay rights, we'd have heard about it by now. She doesn't. She's not your friend and when the chips are down that woman will stab you in the back if it suits her.

But you're all so desperate for some scraps thrown your way that you're all ordering framed prints from the website and are too busy to really see you're being duped.

I hate to say I told you so, but yesterday Cindy McCain recanted her support of ending DADT, even though she acknowledges that it's one of the reasons gay teens are killing themselves.

I mean, I hate to say "I told you so."

But.... Well... I told you so.

Very disappointed....

Is John McCain worried about Cindy McCain being used as a political weapon against his pro-DADT agenda, especially since the review of DADT will be underway soon?

You know, I honestly really like her. She is the one and only Republican I would ever even considering voting for if she ran for office.

Most people who knock her over this issue do so because they haven't followed her politics. She has long been an advocate of gay rights. And despite the boorish attitude and behavior of the man she's married to she is an intelligent woman who has always spoken her mind. Of course, playing the role of the loyal and supportive wife, she stands by his views on many of the traditional issues that are important to Conservatives. But she's what I would call a moderate Republican---conservative in values (as are many Democrats) but also progressive in terms of respecting other people's rights and opinions.

Cindy is not the type of Republican who could successfully run for office in the present day GOP. She's too logical and too smart---especially in view of the extremist Tea Party activism that has taken over the Republican party. The new GOP fan base would much rather have vacuous loudmouthed candidates like Sarah Palin who can stir up up the crowd with seemingly populist sound bites and criticisms of others but have no workable ideas of their own. Cindy scares people on both sides of the aisle because she's too good of an example of a person who can put ideology aside and have an intelligent discussion with another person who has an opinion thats different from hers---without resorting to the ad hominem rhetoric. I know many Republicans who are like her in this respect. Unfortunately, neither Democrats nor Republicans want people like Cindy campaigning for office on their team. People have come to a point where they now seem to expect (and even approve of ) the mud slinging and hateful rhetoric from both sides. We're not America anymore. Its us vs. them.

America needs a Trudeau.

Although it is nice to see Cindy 'supposedly' in favor of gay marriage.... it is sometimes a political tactic to have one's spouse (usually wife) to deliberately express opposing views on key issues. That way you can sell the couple as an open minded package which may have an effective change of heart, or to appear softer on difficult issues.

George Bush was quite effective on his trip to Canada a few years by having his wife reach out to Canadians. Many of us bought it. It was remarkable. An odessey. Canadian media before the visit was overwhelmingly critical of the visit as the vast majority of Canadians were oppossed to Bush's politics. The media during the visit and afterwards was much softer on Bush (for about a week or two) and talked endlessly about Laura warming our hearts...

Diana of Whales warmed Britons to Charles. Mila made Brian Mulroney appear more human, less theatrical during his election campaign, etc.

I wouldn't invest too much in Cindy McCain.

The fact that Britain, stiff upper lip stoic society back then, would need a bit of warming up for Charles must mean Diana married a rock. :D

I'm not gonna cheer for Cindy McCain though, she could have done it in 2008, but I guess she was more concerned about how should she redecorate the White House and appeasing the Evangelicals than actually supporting us.
