Clarkson's "Sober" Is Having A Chart Hang-Over

I'm sure she was hoping it would go higher than No. 110. =(

25-year-old Clarkson hasn't had a No. 1 HOT 100 single since her "American Idol" swan song, "A Moment Like This" five years ago.

Her "My December" album is plagued with negative press. Personally, I adore the album. "How I Feel" is actually screaming to be a single in my opinion. Her and her label opted to release "Sober" as a second single but it met to no success: a chart peak of No. 110 in early July, 2007.

20 years ago a power ballad with such honesty would have been happily greeted at No. 1 (hi, Suzanne Vega's "Luka"). But these days the pop summit is only attainable if you're a R&B/Urban crooner (Akon, Usher, Rihanna, Pussycat Dolls, etc.).

Shame on you, U.S. radio. "Sober" should have flushed out all the crap you've been playing this decade.

Possibly. But would "Luka" be charting today?

Popular tastes change. During some years, hard rock predominates. Other years, it's R&B, and still others, cheesy pop. That's just the way "pop music" tastes fluctuate.

Right now, pop radio is mainly playing midtempo R&B/hip-hop with a smattering of dance-pop. "Sober" isn't a bad song, but it's got nowhere to be played in the current radio crop. A great techno song would be in the same boat, whereas fantastic country and/or balld tracks will be stuck on stations that specialize in that sort of thing.

That was one of my major bones of contention with the KC album - there doesn't appear to be anywhere to promote it. MAYBE A/C will pick up on it, but that's a long hope, I think. I've got some fantastic albums at home that sold next-to-no copies because there wasn't anywhere to push them.

Well yeah Sober is a nice song but as a radio hit I dont see that happening.
And its not!
 
Well duh, her song "Sober" is amazing, but of course it's not going to be a number 1 smash hit. It isn't mainstream. It's not going to compete with the dumb ass Umbrella song. I think "My December" is amazing and Kelly is the best, and who cares if it isn't selling as much. It's dumb for people to judge talent and music based on record sales, because the sales doesn't mean anything.
 
I love that song and I'm enjoying her album a lot, its to bad it isn't doing that well.
 
Clarkson's divine "My December" will be hard pressed to go platinum. But come Grammy time? ... something is telling me this former Best Pop Album winner might be up for that recognition one more time.

NARAS loves the under dog. And of course they love giving past winners award upon award.

I think there is a bigger expectation now to have a #1 single. I remember a time when a top 10 hit was considered a great success and reaching #1 was a dream come true. Now, it seems that if it doesn't reach #1 for at least one week a song is considered a failure.

It's also hard for some people to accept that Kelly Clarkson isn't and doesn't have the desire to be the pop princess that Simon Cowell and others expected her to be after Idol (although many on this board have grasped it--go JUB!). She seems to have made the conscious decision to make a smart and solid rock album as opposed to a collection of singles. There are a couple of songs that could have decent play, but nothing that is going to dominate Top 40 radio. The downside is, I could see her label deciding she's not working and dropping her. On the upside, that could be the best thing to happen to her. She could switch to a good indi and have a nice long career making the albums she wants to make without Clive Davis threatening to pull the rug out every time. It's worked for a lot of artists who are more worried about the art than the sales.

Especially in the UK. A lot of artists I listen to are probably being dropped as I type. Isn't it more about having a successful album anyways? What good are five #1s if your album doesn't sell shit?
 
I thought Sober was dull, and I was truly disappointed. "Breakaway" was a great pop record, but I don't see the success happening again with this album.

What about Because of You?That is the song that gave her the A-list status at the Grammys.And Since U Been Gone won her a Grammy.

Well...Sober is a pretty good song.She should make a video for that.Who knows...the song might even chart at #70 0r #80 on the Hot 100.

IMO,One Minute & How I Feel is has singles written all over them.

Does anyone know of "Sober" sampled something else? The instrumental sounds like another song i've heard before.
 
Sober was a bad choice single after NA. Its good but its not meant to be a 2nd single. They should of gone with "How I feel?" or "One Minute". She needed another upbeat song to try and get radio back behind her. If her second single did good, she should of released "Maybe", thats a song that has potential if radio gives it a chance. Then I feel "Judas" or "Haunted". It just sucks radio doesnt give her a chance. Im guessing we wont see anymore singles, since obviously radio isnt helping Kelly. Plus Kelly is now busy being back in the studio and doesnt have time to promote.
