Club Q Colorado shooting: Five dead after attack at nightclub

Just seeing his picture but what goes through his head to do this what an idiot ruining those people who die he doesn't deserve to life

Our former member, Hotdog1846 lives in Colorado Springs. I have visited him there on multiple occasions. The city is indeed conservative, as any military base town would be, but has its progressive elements as well. I know he sang in a gay men's chorus, hiked with a gay men's hiking group, and served in the lay leadership of his Lutheran church. The Springs also hosted a Pride Parade every year back when he and I were visiting.

So, don't imagine it some backwater where gays are closeted out of necessity.

Also, our own Lex lives nearby in Denver but frequented the Springs for several informal JUB meetups.

It feels very near to know gay men out in that community and likely familiar with those who went to that club.

I can solve the mystery of how the record was sealed but I don't wanna rattle anybody's sensitivies so I'll leave that part alone.

Inventory:

Disgruntled far right politics. Check.
Unmonitored domestic terrorism. Check.
Enabling well-connected family. Check.
Unprosecuted extremism and violence. Check.

I said this would happen before the end of the year, failure to track homegrown terrorism has cost more lives. Another disgruntled yt guy who should've been on some kind of watchlist. We're not learning from these attacks, we're not having the right kinds of conversations afterwards (already with the mental illness), we're not dissecting the statistics and demographics the way we do urban violence. I'm fearful there are going to be more attacks next year. These incidents are practically sanctioned by the state and the attackers are safeguarded by power structures we are committed to upholding so, thoughts and prayers til the next shooting. Hopefully no one from our site is affected, I lost contact with Lex after my last fb page got locked so I haven't spoken to him since he posted here. If someone does speak to him outside JUB an update would be most courteous and appreciated.

on gun deaths:
There were 1.5 million of them between 1968 and 2017 - that's higher than the number of soldiers killed in every US conflict since the American War for Independence in 1775.
In 2020 alone, more than 45,000 Americans died at the end of a barrel of a gun, whether by homicide or suicide, more than any other year on record. The figure represents a 25% increase from five years prior, and a 43% increase from 2010.
Clearly we need to require club-goers to carry guns. You walk through the metal detector and it doesn't go off. "Oh, you not packin no heat?"

By the end of this week or earlier, this story won't even be part of the main news cycle in the US.

It won’t make it past Tuesday. Thanksgiving travel and Black Friday deals will stop it before Wednesday.

Sonofabitch I didn't realize it's already Thanksgiving. Yeah, soon as somebody gets bodyslammed at Target tryna secure the last flatscreen this story's gone from the cycle. This is why I'm semi-mourning twitter, it was a viable way for "the other" to put pressure on the media and big companies, and to keep stories like this alive. Which is probably why tanking it seems so attractive to Mrs Musk. Destroy her critics and silence the underdog is probably worth a cool 44bil to her. The Shanquella Robsinson murder was dismissed by Mexican authorities as "no foul play" and only gained traction after black twitter kept her name trending until an investigation was launched. We need to find a replacement ASAP.

I'm dreading the victim name/photo release. It's never really real until you see the smiling pictures and those paragraphs about where they're from and what they wanted to do with their lives. :(

And yeah. His pics are out there.

His mother and her father sound like real head cases too

Thanks for the link.

It's a rather long read, but interesting.

The homemade bomb from the info on the previous arrest is intriguing. We'll probably never know what damage he is capable of causing.

What I found most interesting, though, is the Mormon connection. Probably not something the 'we're not all like that' crowd wants to discuss, though.

Every man is entitled to form his own opinion of religion, of religions, and fanatics, but I'd like to share what I observed as I worked with Mormons who had been missionaries sent to my hometown in recent decades.

I felt obliged to study up on them, to encounter them as knowledgeably as I could since I did not grow up around any or know any. So many people admire the Mormons because they value the family so highly. In fact, gay youth in the LDS is creating a crisis for the church, as it pits church authority against family love. Although there certainly are severe individuals who reject their gay sons, in the LDS, in other religions, and in some families without religion, what seems more apparent in reading LDS stories online is that lots of parents have gone to bat to fight for their gay sons within the LDS. It has resulted in the LDS hierarchy issuing statements to soften the rejection language about gays and other LGBTQ persons.

What seems evident in this case is the same pattern we've seen in so many others: a domestic terrorist is fixated on some minority, either sexual, ethnic, or racial, and targets them for murder. He sounds like he's also mentally ill, which isn't an exculpation of his terrorism, only an aspect of it.

Mormonism in the 19th century was more strident and virulent, but it was also fending off attacks from other religions AND the U.S. governmnet. Mormon militias were literally at war with the Missouri militia as well as the US Army at different times. The American government sent troops to seize the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City in 1858, and again in 1890 the US Supreme Court ruled that polygamy was illegal, making the LDS an illegal organization.

But, lots of time and change has passed since then. Mormons have softened their rhetoric about other Americans and religions. They work almost tirelessly to evangelize, but they do not generally preach hate. It's more about righteousness, like some Jewish groups espouse. Or diehard Catholics.

You don't have to preach hate when you support politicians that do it for you. The hate isn't expressed in sermons anymore it's expressed at the voting booth. The churches give polite, non-offensive statements to the press so they won't get marauded by the "evil woke mob," then they vote for republicans who would tear gay marriage to shreds given half the chance. Assuming blacks and gays are allowed to narrate their own experience within the church..... some have outright said they don't feel safe in their wards anymore, per the political climate. Then again it's never really taken much effort for institutions of bigotry to earn a gold star and the softest criticisms possible (if not blatant defense) from the American public.

He was carrying a rifle. How did he ever get into the club?
