Let me join the commenters here who say, I got one years ago and I've never regretted it. The needle stick really isn't bad at all...it's over in half a second. Honestly the 'have to sit to piss' thing is total horse shit. It takes some adjustment to learn to hit a toilent again since theres something disturbing the stream but it's not a big adjustment.

Did it myself... kept everything really sterile. Didn't really hurt at all. First piercing for me, too. Go for it, as long as you won't mind dealing with the dripping every time you urinate. Read up (online) about the best ways to do it and you'll be fine!
 
I've started thinking about getting a PA too - suggested it to my bf the other nite and he got hard in his jeans at the thought of it.

I've currently got a PA and Ampallang. In the past, I've also had an Apadravya and Frenum piercing. None of them were excessively painful, the Ampallang/Apadravya hurt maybe twice as much as the PA (though I found the PA to be a bit worse than either of my nipples).

The PA is a good piercing to get, especially if starting out, heals easily, and adds a fair bit of sensation. However, all the ones I've had haven't settled, so will be retiring mine soon (given up on them tbh.) and getting my Apadravya re-done sometime in the near-ish future.

The Ampallang however, is incredible! Easily my favourite piercing - looks badass too! Adds an unbelievable amount of sensation (the Apadravya adds a fair bit too), the point of orgasm feels absolutely electric! It is well worth getting if you can bring yourself to do it (though really the pain isn't all that bad). I also want to get a pubic piercing next, and possibly one or to near the base of the penis.

My eventual plan is to get a couple of wands custom made for an Apadravya, one short one and a longer one, but won't be for quite a while (financial reasons mainly).

You would be able to masturbate within a week with a PA (2-3 weeks with an Apa/Amp), and as long as you cleaned the piercing site religiously, sex within 4 weeks with a PA, and around 8 weeks with an Apa/Amp. Full time to heal for a PA is 2-3 months, Apadravya 4-6 months (as they are always tran-surethral) and Ampallang 6-9 months on average, though Ampallangs which are trans-urethral heal in more like 4-6 months (mine isn't trans-urethral though).

The pain really isn't too bad (around 4/10 for the Frenum/PA and around 5/10 for the Apadravya/Ampallang). I had the PA re-done 5-6 times in total (really wanted to be able to heal one), but have now given up on it. I've only ever had a local anaesthetic once, on one of the PA's and honestly, I couldn't tell the difference (local anaesthetic creams require 60-90 minutes to reach full efficacy when applied transdermally).
