Cold sore on your lips ...

Generally HSV I is the above the waist one, while HSV II is below. But from what I understand boths varieties can infect both places. I'm sure one of our docs here can correct me if I'm wrong.

BTW, other virus in the herpes family include Varicella-Zoster which causes chicken pox, and Exptein-Barr, which causes infectious mono.

And Shingles.

The thing about cold sores/herpes simplex, and chicken pox is that they can appear again in a later stage in your life. These viruses are never killed, except they remain with you. At times of stress, they may appear again. So expect an outbreak of cold sore when you've got a lot going on. Best thing to do is to eat properly, drink plenty of fluids and make sure you get plenty of rest too.

With respect to the Chicken pox virus, once you've had it, at the later stage in life, the very same virus then gives you shingles. It can be fairly painful, as it effects the nerves. There may be break out of a couple or more blisters somewhere on your boady and intense pain. You'd need to see the doctor immediately, as it can become fairly excruciatingly painful. My mother had it some years back, and only medication could get her better.

Dude Im serious here .. Go by ABREVA its expensive but it works amazingly..buy it at any drugstore

Also it will go away much faster. get Lysine tablets and take as many as you can..im talking 10 of them per day.. ist an amino acid so there is no harm in it. Its teh same thing in that Herpecin that guy mentioned above but more of it. It shrinks them really quickly

do it.. I know of what I speak

An old Scottish remedy. Dab the cold sore with whisky once or twice a day and it will disappear. You might also enjoy having the sore while it lasts.

cold sore is very common.

i went to phamarcy to get some tablet but they said need a doctor's hand writing. I didn't bother with that and bought Lysine tablets instead.

I think it is a waste of tax payers money to see a doctor for a cold sore tablets.

Sorry to the doctors, i don't mean to offend but the trip to a doctor only for his hand writing is a waste of time and tax payers money.

If you get a cold sore, and you go to a doctor and get a prescription to get rid of it, it will probably be gone in about four days.

If you do nothing and you just let it run its course, it will be gone in half-a-week or so.

I would not run to a doctor for a prescription to get rid of your cold sore.

(Well, I would, but that is a different story.)

If I were you I would not run to a doctor for a prescription. We (read: North Americans) are over medicated.
In most cases, cold sores can be prevented; especially once you learn your triggers. When you are cursed with an outbreak, they can be treated with less drastic measures than prescription drugs. Or simply wait the week or two for the virus to run its course.

Valtrex is a miracle pill. It's a script, but these things get worse and worse and they happen when you are stressed. I kept having outbreaks, but I took Valtrex three or four times when I was about to have an outbreak (you take it before you breakout and it heals faster and keeps it from blistering).

I HIGHLY recommend this prescription. You only take 4 pills, 2 at the onset, 2 more twelve ours later and your done. BRILLIANT!

And Shingles.

I've only just gotten over shingles (well, about 4 months ago, but I'm still a bit scarred from it)

I get cold sores all the time, just one of those things. Isn't it a bit genetic as well, my father has them as does his mother, but my mum doesn't get them, neither does my dads dad.

Wow! At 22 and a case of the shingles. That is rare. Are you sure they are the shingles? You had chicken Pox earlier in life.
Because shingles are some thing that elderly people get more often than young as the immune system naturally weakens and allows the virus to escape its hiding place in the spine. Usually the young person's immune system is too strong to allow a outbreak. This is in general but it is rare for someone in their 20's to get shingles.
I had a friend who was about 26 and got shingles. The first Doctor didn't consider it more than a rash, but it didn't go away and must have been very painful because I took him to another Doctor about a week later that he paid for. He had shingles. As he had not any trauma or severe stress to his physical/mental state or surgery which can allow a outbreak in a young person it was a hint for a HIV test as it was a sign of a immune system under stress.
He did not have HIV as the test results proved but since then I have talked to a few guys who said that was the first clue to a HIV infection they didn't know they had.
Shingles can be fatal as it effects the nerves in the Respiratory or heart , more so with weakened immune systems.

Another of the hundreds of herpes infections is CMV some thing that only babies and people with HIV/AIDS are at great risk from. This will make you blind and kill you. It is pretty rare in babies and in full blown AIDS people due to the medications keep T-cells in a better range. A sign of CMV would be floaters in the eyes. If you ever note a lot of these little black dots floating around get to a Doctor because CMV moves fast and the damage is not repairable to your vision. It is a sign of very low T-cells and full blown AIDS not HIV infection.

Of the hundreds of herpes infections not all are sexually spread or require direct contact. We live all around the CMV and as deadly as it is harmless, we never even know it is around.

Ask your dr to Rx famcyclovir. This is the generic name. It should have gone generic in Dec '07. It is more potent and even easier dosing than Valtrex. At the first tingle around your mouth, you take 3 tablets (1500 mg) and that's it. Most outbreaks are averted or will be mild to moderate. Ask your dr for about 21 pills (this is usually all insurance will allow you to get in a single rx). Keep them on you at all times OR put some in the different places you might be (car, gym bag, work desk, home) because the all premise of the med is to react FAST. It does no good to arrive at work at 9am, feel the tingle, but you don't have access to your meds until 5pm.
