Actually at this point in time with support for 95 long gone and 98 being dropped (If it hasn't already) should be time to jump to either XP or Vista.

But that aside, can you roll back the drivers for the video or go into control panel>Display>Settings and try changing the color.

You might want to check this out:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx

actually from what you're describing the problem probably isn't with your computer at all, but with the monitor. The color settings could be messed up, or it could be broken. If it's an old monitor, i'd say with 99% certainty u need a new one. Try hooking up a spare to see if that fixes the problem.

microsoft no longer supports windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, or XP. And if the computer WAS running win95, then i garuntee you it cannot run Windows Vista. Vista isn't just an OS upgrade, it's heavy stuff, it will not run on anything less then a relatively new computer.

/\ OMG i can't believe that! i wish that sort of thing would make national news i bet the public outcry would get MS to back off.

are the colors reverted to just like 16 colors or 256 colors? maybe the driver for the video card doesn't work in win98. you could look for a driver for your video card that works with win98 or maybe it was the driver for the monitor.

sounds to me like you just need to make sure the right drivers are installed for the video card. Go into the control panel and click on System/Hardare/Device Manager. Look to see if the video card is listed. You may just need to download new drivers.

Get your parents a Mac.

I've had a problem with my screen for a while now and I didn't realise what was causing it till I came across it accidentally.

The corners were going a different colour to the rest of the screen. I shifted the speakers right beside the screen and the corner colours changed! The speakers were affecting the screen.

So now I've got a 5.1 speaker system with my new tower and I keep speakers away from the screen [which is the next item to be replaced)

Maybe not your problem but thought I'd mention it

when you speakers are changing the colours on your crt monitor, you just need to degauss it (usually there is an option for that in the menu, or even a button - the symbol often is a magnet). plus you should get shielded speakers next time ;)

Are you sure you have the color set correctly? Especially with older Windows, but even with XP, some drivers install with a default (ugly) 16 color setting. Right click on the desktop -> properties -> settings and select a higher color quality setting. I'll bet that's all it is. If not then you'll have go driver searching.

As others have said on new install of windows the graphics card is often not recognised and defaults to a low res 800 * 600 resolution with 16 or 256 colours so you need to check the drivers and settings. The monitor is probably fine, the most common prob with them is losing one of the colours, red green or blue, resulting in an overall tinge. This is usually down to the lead. Degausing is normally automatic when you turn the monitor on after it has been off for a few minutes, it uses a thermostatically controlled circuit, or at least it used to in old monitors. LCD screens of course don't have or need it.
