It was a race to see whether I would do this post on my birthday or the occasion of 2,000 posts. The birthday won out.

Not many of you know much about me on here, save for the fact that I'm one of the loud cheerleaders on the Amatuer Selfipic. board. I love that particular forum because it reminds me of the "I'll show you mine if you show me yours" days of the boys-will-be-boys games I used to play as a kid. If I've ever come across as overly enthusiastic or have creeped out any of our younger members, I can assure you that I could not be any more harmless.

On this, the occasion of my 41st b'day, I am choosing to finally introduce myself to the members here. :bday:

I'm happily married to the man of my dreams, who I've been with for almost 14 years. We've been officially gay-married [it's legal in Canada] for 2 & 1/2 years.

In May of 2000, I was given the scary diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, after a few very nerve-racking years of falling over for no reason and bizarre numbness in my hands and feet.

Putting a name to it came as a relief, actually, as I was given all kinds of other scary possibilities like brain tumour etc.

I had to leave work [as a music store retail manager and church organist/choir director] in 2003 because of worsening symptoms. Since then, I've gone from using a cane, to a walker, and last year, to a wheelchair full time. Each of these steps was initially scary, but once past the milestone, I realized just how much easier life becomes.

Sure, I'm reliant on others to drive me on errands and social engagements, but other than that, life is great. I have the internet to keep me amused during the days and very supportive friends and family to keep me entertained the rest of the time.

Although it may sound cliché, having a positive attitude really does keep me going. I am fortunate and indeed blessed to be this way.

What a terrific story and inspiration you are to the rest of us.

And,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Here's hoping #41 is great and that your 42nd year is the best one yet.

Congrats, too, on your upcoming 2000 posts!

Now that you've found our forum (in addition to the great self-pics one), be sure to drop in and offer your thoughts!

Well, you've told us everything else about you except.....your name!

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I know living with MS is not easy, as one of my employees was diagnosed nearly 10 years ago with it. I've watched her slowly deteriorate and she now has a hard time walking around. She's pretty resilient and refuses to give up working and driving, which she can still do, but we all know the day is soon approaching where she won't be able to come to work.

I hope they find a cure soon. Until then, stay strong, and keep up that great spirit you have!

PS -- so how's sex in a wheelchair? Don't tell me you and your husband haven't done it yet! ;)

You make a good point!

"Hello, my name is Gary and I'm an internet sexual complusive."

Happy birthday and more to come. I have a dear friend who has the same malady, her courage is unbelievable, and her drive too, people like you give the rest of us courage to face whatever may come our way, thanks for that.

Hi celtboy,

I came to this thread from a link you put in a message you wrote on an amateur pic post ('cause I'm an internet sexual compulsive too!). Very nice introduction. Congratulations on meeting and marrying the man of your dreams. That's a lovely story. I'm sorry about the multiple sclerosis, but your positive attitude must be a benefit to you.

You seem like such a sweet guy. But then, Canada is filled with sweet guys, isn't it? Perhaps I should move...

Sam

Two things: Happy Birthday, you sexy, sexy Libra (second fav sign to the dreamy Pisces) and OMG! I'm sorry you're in a wheel chair! And a cane?! That's for the old folks! #-o

Have a sweet day, honey. Stay positive. ..| :grrr:

happy birthday brah! my adopted dad was diagnosed with MS 18 years ago, but his docs said he's prolly had it for way longer. thanks for sharin yer story!

I'm sorry you're in a wheel chair!
Not to worry at all, my friend. The chair makes my life a whole lot easier than the cane or walker ever did. I can bomb around the apartment and if I have to retrace my steps, there's far less cursing involved.

MS is a tricky SOB, but I am making it through the best way that I can. I love the internet [and sites like this] to keep me distracted.

Thanks for all the well-wishes, guys.

Happy Belated Birthday Celtboy!!! Your positive approach to life is an inspiration. I have a friend who has MS and she is just like you, always positive and fighting. That helps me face the problems I go through in life. Keep fighting the good fight. I hope they come up with a cure someday for MS. Take care.
