Commission, Salary, or Hourly?

My primary job is a combination salary with bonus for goal achievement. However, my board last year cut the bonus because they thought the goals were too easily achieved!

I also do consulting work and get paid hourly; will be moving to full time salary plus bonus starting July 1.

Most of my compensation comes from my salary, but it gets decently supplemented by a bonus every year, various stock awards that vest one fifth every year for 5 years and an employee stock purchase plan. The bonus and stock awards vary a lot by year depending on my performance and the performance of the company.

My profession (software engineer) is almost always paid as a salary and sometimes more rarely in equity. In this profession, hourly pay is really only seen in very low level jobs, government jobs or if you're working as an independent contractor. Most professional sorts of jobs (doctors, lawyers, engineers, architects, etc.) are exempted from the standard labor laws that mandate things like overtime pay.

Perhaps surprisingly, there are some salaried jobs out there that do pay overtime. I have engineer friends at Boeing that are in that situation in fact.

Working for the city and being a Manager, I am salaried. If I work any overtime, they give me the time off on a day I choose. I never liked salaried positions, but the pay was too good to refuse this time.

work?
work?

what the hell is work?

i just get paid to sit on my PreTTy ass

amen. back in the day you could take a month-long break between jobs and be okay, now its like everyday is an argument about which bill we can't afford to pay. my boyfriend stands at the pump and wonders sometimes if he should drive to work or eat that day.

Yeah, I'm the same way. I've gotten to the point where I don't eat all day in fears of not having food (or money for food or a job to get money for food) so it's all kinds of fun! Whee!!!

Luckily I'm paid a salary now but in many previous roles I've been on an hourly rate and/or commission.

It's a really unfortunate way to pay many people and can be quite dispirriting (sp?). As for being on commission only? It's bullshit
