I've never used gang showers with anyone - each time, I've been on my own.
The gym I go to has semi-private stalls - basically, they are cubicles without doors. Two rows of seven facing each other. You can't see the person next to you, but you can see four people across the way about 6 feet away. Some guys (usually the older ones; 30+) go naked; the younger guys usually either keep their underwear on or just don't shower. Every now and again you'll get a schoolboy come in and be completely not shy, and I think that freaks some of the older young guys (20-30) out.
The other gym I go to has fully private stalls - two rows of five facing each other, but each one has a semi-opaque glass door. I usually leave my door open because the stalls are really really cramped. And because I enjoy the scenery, when it is there. Surprisingly, so many of the guys keep their boxers on even when their doors are closed. And they get dressed hidden under towels, or go to a toilet cubicle. Crazy.
