My computer was advertised as 4gigs of ram but when I got it I found out only 64 bit versions of Vista can use 4 gigs of ram and mine only uses about 3.3 gigs. why would someone advertise/build a computer that cant use all its ram?

i also come to find out that many features of my vista ultimate cannot be used because its only a 32 bit version, did Dell screw up and install the wrong operating system?

well the computer DOES have 4 gigs of ram. but yeah, they should have told you in advance that it can't use all of it.

yes i think so, it did seem strange now, that I have been taking computer classes the limitation is the software.

Are you on SP1?
It does not matter. SP1 will only report all the memory that is installed (without SP1 it was showing only what it could use.) But it still cannot benefit from it all at once (without doing something like the PAE hack, which can lead to other problems). I disagree with Nolie. MS is not being up front about real world usage. There are endless technical articles about this, even with SP1. Here is just one of many: http://whyamistilltyping.wordpress.com/2008/05/29/vista-sp1-and-the-red-herring-breaking-the-32bit-4gb-limit/

And here's a good writeup in which it is explained why enabling PAE won't realistically help, and could even hurt (written before SP1, but it makes no difference with this issue.):

In short, it requires special drivers or special programming just for many apps, especially games, to work properly in PAE mode. PAE also consumes more CPU time.

my computer is the same way. some of the memory is shared with the graphics card. you can change this in the bios if you need to, but if you are not experiencing any problems I would leave it the way it is.

Well the computer does have 4 gigs of RAM in it, so they didn't lie. You just bought the 32bit version of the operating system. You should have gotten the one that had the 64bit Vista in it.
