Condoms are not as safe as thought?

WTF! A few months ago I gave a guy oral sex and he gave me oral. I insisted on condoms on him and me and thought I was protecting myself. Now I am reading that not only are they not effective on anal sex (see FDA link) but there is also no proof they are effective in protection of oral sex?

(guess I wil never have anal sex after all and oral is no longer safe either even with a fricking condom).

your condom source is from 1989...first off: condoms are better now. second off: remember 1980's public mindset in relation to sodomy and 'gay life style' during the first few years of the AIDS epidemic.

I'm not sure that I would take sex advice from the FDA, especially on a 20 year old source.

Generally, the CDC and state department of health sites have more reliable information. But one thing to keep in mind is that there were some Congressional mandates that were passed during the Bush administration (2000-2008 ) that required the CDC to recommend abstinence as the solution to all of society's ills.

For example, read through this link. Note that the text of the page says that condoms are effective. But then there's a disclaimer at the top that says, "Well, abstinence is the most reliable means of not getting an STD". That's a true statement but why the big bold paragraph at the top of the page? The answer is because Congress made them say that.

To quote the CDC link (publication date 2010):

Consistent and correct use of latex condoms is highly effective in preventing sexual transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Wow... why would you go to these places as a source dude? Mind boggling.

These are the same people who keep cigarettes and alcohol legal while keeping marijuana illegal. The same ones that claim that certain drugs (MDMA, LSD) have no therapeutic use despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary from scientific and therapeutic studies. Of course their information is going to be biased and homophobic... they have a mass culture to operate.

Rather like crossing a road there is no guarantee that we will make it safely to the other side. But we take simple precautions, such as looking in both directions before choosing to cross in safety.

The control freak personality will demand a one hundred percent guarantee that they will return home safely before venturing outside their front door. Such a guarantee does not exist.

Life is filled with risks. The wise person takes simple precautions to minimise risk, so that life can be lived in celebration, rather than in fear of the unknown.

Well, let's start with the risk of HIV transmission through oral sex. It's possible but occurs very rarely. So, you're starting with a low risk.

Since HIV is dependent upon body fluid exchange for transmission and an intact condom prevent exchange of body fluids, you've taken a low risk activity and made it exponentially lower.

If you have no opposition to using a condom for oral sex, you're also lowering your risk for other (and more common) STDs like gonorrhea and chlamydia. And you're probably lowering your risk for HPV.
