Confession: I am terrified that this anti gay initiative in California is going to become law....

Despite how nigh-impossible it might be that the Sodomite Suppression Act will become a reality, I can't help but feel really scared that it might...This Matt McLaughlin guy seems to be on the same level of crazy as Fred Phelps was...it seems to me he's the kind of guy that would stop at nothing to get this passed, even including some serious payola in the mix...

God, just the chance that in a matter of two years, California might go from gay paradise to worse than pre- Lawrence vs Texas Southern US.

Not possible at so many levels.

First, to get it on the ballot would require hundreds of thousands of signatures. Which is very expensive and particularly difficult in the case of a "law" that calls for murder.

Second, even if it got to the ballot, it would have to pass, which is unlikely.

Third, even if it did pass, it could not be implemented, since the action it calls for, murder, is itself illegal in California.

Fourth, the California AG is asking a judge to invalidate this proposed ballot initiative even before it goes to the collection of signature phase because it is so blatantly unconstitutional. And that is very likely to happen.

This is just a stunt.

A counter bill to the Sodomite Suppression Act has been filed by another California citizen, Charlotte Laws. Ms. Laws calls her bill the "Intolerant Jackass Act."

The Intolerant Jackass Act would mandate sensitivity training for 3 hours/month x 12 months for anyone who proposes a bill to murder gays. It would also require the proponent of anti-gay murder bills to donate $5,000 to a pro-gay organization.

He is easily on the same level of crazy as...what's his name again?....irrelevant dead guy??

Uhhhh ahhh...He would stop at nothing to get this passed but the point is... there are many many more who would stop at nothing to stop him.

He's fucked.

I believe that Murder I is a felony not only in California, but everywhere else. It also violates the Fifth Commandment (Thou shalt not kill.) :##: Perhaps we are regarded as subhuman, which would nullify the above.

AKA, a drowning man grasping at straws.

McLaughlin's a lawyer. What's the deal with officers of the court? Could he be disbarred for counselling first-degree murder? Or conspiracy to commit murder?

Or practising law without a brain?

xbox. You seriously need to learn to relax.

No state can institute a law for something that the Supreme Court has ruled to be legal.

See Lawrence v. Texas

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_v._Texas

Such a law would be recognized to be invalid before being instated.

I have to say though, can you imagine what would happen if this assclown tried to pull this shit with any other group?

Imagine if he were trying to kill jews or blacks. Imagine what the "initiative" would be called. And then imagine the riots that would occur to change the legal process so he would have never made it this far.

Meanwhile we politely wait for it to go away. I'm not sure how to analyse that.

So true.

Imagine if Indiana passed an anti-Jew discrimination bill, allowing businesses to refuse service to Jews, if their religion demanded it. The backlash against such a thing would destroy the careers of everyone involved in passing such a bill.

And yet, Republicans regard such bigotry, directed at gays, as not only tolerable but necessary to their political success.

Unbelievable. And very, very sad that America is such a miserable failure when it comes to human rights.

This is accurate. And I doubt it will be pass. But it's very proposal puts into context the religious-themed discrimination laws and proposed laws.

The U.S. allows a person to demand murder of anyone?

It actually stands aside, stroking its beard and nodding sagely at the deep wisdom of free speech?

If this madman demanded a law allowing people the right to shoot Jews in the head, he'd be labelled a terrorist and thrown in prison.

What the fuck is wrong with you people?

Oh come on. DO a little research before you get condescending and pointlessly indignant. This is illegal on it's face, the loophole that got it this far is being closed, the people in charge have asked the courts to kill it immediately.

If it's illegal on its face, the guy would be charged with incitement to riot, counselling murder and or conspiracy to commit murder.

Condescension be damned. The U.S. has burned its so-called constitution and is a theocratic dictatorship.

This is just a stupid attempt to justify and absolutely ignorant rant about Americans. Wherever you are from, it's obvious you know nothing about the US or how the system here functions.

I'm right next door to your Christian born-again land-of-the-free theocracy, and I'm willing to bet I've been to more places in the U.S. than you have and know more about the political system — what's left of it — than you do.

Tell me this: What would be the reaction to a California proposition calling for every Muslim or Christian or Jew or black or hispanic in the state to be killed on sight by a shot through the head?

But it's gays, so at the most, the call for mass murder is shrugged off.

I'm almost tempted to grab a soap box, fly to L.A., stand on a street corner and yell through a bullhorn that all Christians should be killed with a shot through the head. Free speech and all that.

But I've stopped visiting the U.S., where the cops — when they're not killing children — state governors and state governments are legal side-of-the-road extortionists and threaten to take away their victims' children if they don't hand over all their money and possessions.

It's safer in Guatemala.

Blah blah blah blah I'm guessing from yet another pretentious Canadian maiden aunt (not you Bankside) with painfully bunched panties.

There was nothing shrugged off about this, you just want to ignore the facts so you can have your silly histrionics.

Is that supposed to be clever? Let me guess, you are one of those people who just can't stop yourself.
