You could always start a conversation with either of them. Hi how's it goin?... and go from there. Then when you're getting to know more about each other, you can ask if he has a girlfriend or boyfriend.

There's one simple way to find out whether a person is gay or straight: Ask them.

Eventually, it just comes up in conversation- especially, if you start talking about dating or relationships.

At some point, someone will stop saying "the person that I'm dating" or "they slept over last night" and will instead, "My boyfriend/girlfriend" or "He/she is coming over and we're going out". A big hint- straight people don't hesitate when using gender pronouns but closeted gay people will often use gender neutral terms like "person", "they", "someone"...

But it's not offensive to just say, "Do you have a girlfriend or boyfriend?". People aren't offended by the question or implication these days.
 
Or you can sit in the corner making furtive observations, and waiting for other people to come over and ask you to have sex with them.

I can guarantee that the former will result in a lot more sex, though.
