I connected my laptop to my new HDTV to use it as a monitor sometimes...but when I go to play most of my videos they just show a black box where the video is playing on my laptop on the TV...sound comes out but no picture....other videos like online play fine and show up but not my videos on my hard drive through Windows Media Player or Real Player. Is there something I can do or download to make them work on the TV?

Are the videos AVIs that open with DiVx player?

Oh dear I had this once when using the svideo out put on a laptop running XP. There is some setting you have to change in either media player preferences or general display preferences. What is your setup so as I know what to Google for?

If you are using DiVx player and opening the file, then dragging it onto the tv screen, usually, it produces a black box with sound.

If you are using DiVx player, open the player and drag it onto the tv screen, then click on the arrow (file menu) and open the file. Then, it works perfectly!

what do you mean "drag it onto the tv screen?

I have a Gateway laptop running Windows XP....connected to my VIZIO HDTV using an SVGA cord connected to my RGB PC port on my tv

not all of the files were .avi...some were .wmv....the .avi's that play with my DiVx codec are working fine...it's just all the other vids that aren't working....is there another DIVx thing that I should get?

I seem to have gotten it to work...last night when things weren't playing I had the screen on both my laptop and my TV...and now I have it so it's just on the TV and the laptop screen is black...and now everything seems to be playing! So thanks for all your help guys!

sounds like it was overlay ;)
Corny, totally unsubstantiated rumor puts it that sometimes you yourself are too tuckered out from being over-layed to help on any more tech questions! ;)
