What's racist about saying "indian giver" -- it doesn't reflect on native americans but does badly on the other party.

I appreciate your point, but the Indian Giver reference is in this thread, not another thread. In responding to White Eagle, who I thought we all know to be Native American, the term is insensitive and thoughtless.

Using it at all is a reflection of that easy use of racist expressions that we are all guilty of from time to time. And I'm sure that most would hope and agree that it was not used intentionally or with mailice.

I'm sure that once Chance apologizes to White Eagle, we'll all be tight compadres again. And everyone will just be more careful in the future before they hurl stones at glass houses.

And we all think it is great that Chance is a nice guy and not anything like he presents himself on this forum. And I'm a nice guy too, but I'll bet you'd never get Chance agreeing to that.

If Centex caught White Eagle and wrapped him up with a bow and presented him to rareboy, then I think Centex would be an Indian giver. Also, White Eagle would be an Indian given, and rareboy would be an Indian receiver.

I don't think it makes any difference whether there's anyone who's Native American around or not -- "Indian giver" is offensive because it's based on a degrading racial stereotype. Since it's a minority race, the term should be offensive to anyone who's a member of any minority, and to anyone who has a regard for any minority.

I think it would be obvious it's insulting, because it portrays Native Americans as untrustworthy -- thus my comment to Jack.

Obviously I can't accept your apology for someone else, but I believe it's sincere.



Just for contrast, the State of Oregon decided that schools can't have Native American 'mascots' any more; supposedly those are insulting. They didn't care that two of the existing such 'mascots' were chosen to honor the local native tribes, and that several tribal associations spoke up to state that they didn't find any of the 'mascots' offensive.

I completely agree here, as far as social issues are concerned. Social conservatism is absolute religiously produced santorum in a good 90% of the cases, and therefore anyone who tries to implement it in politics is instantly discredited. That's kind of the whole issue here with the conservatives/Republicans distinction.

Nonsence. Reality distortion is a right win phenomenon. Period. There is no equivalent to this on the left.

We have no deniers of evolution, global warming, or the hole in the ozone layer. We don't advocate changing textbooks to teach religion in science class. We don't want to make history books sound as though the founding fathers were attempting to establish Protestant Christianity as the state religion, because they weren't.

We don't cite pseudo-studies to claim gay marriage is harmful to society or gay adoption harmful to children. We don't claim sexuality to be changeable with "therapy" because we know that real, actual, medical studies demonstrate otherwise.

Karl Rove once smirkingly defined a Democrat as "Someone with a doctorate." On the left, we have no disdain for education, reason, and scholarship. We believe these to be useful tools in guiding legislators to appropriate action.

A fundamental difference between left and right in America is that the left looks at the world and tries to fashion policy to address its problems. The right takes its policy and tries to fashion reality to conform to it.

It is not a difference in opinions or ideologies. It is a fundamental difference in attitude toward the political and social process.


And no offense, but in the end, the Obama administration was ineffectual MOSTLY because the Republicans said from the very start "no, you're not one of us, there will be no cooperation" and the four years were spent not governing but fear mongering.

With a largely Republican government it's outrageous to blame the President for how the country is, when he had to work IN SPITE of his government the entire time.
