Consumption of candy was associated with greater longevity in this study.

Might have more to say about those who still enjoy life rather than any metabolic influence of a few empty calories.

Factoids can mislead. Sometimes they even do it by posing a misdirecting question. Isn't it true that Gold's Gym paid for the study?

Looking at this study, I notice a couple of things. First , the study is 25 years old, and second, the study subjects were male Harvard graduates, which means that generalization to the larger general population cannot easily be determined.

They looked at the likelihood of men dying during the five-year period of the study, and I think it's likely that the reverse of the conclusion is true-- healthier men eat more candy than sickly men, not that candy makes men more healthy. Appetite can be looked at as a sign of health-- people who are sick eat less, and have less desire to eat. Thus, I suspect they could have found that healthier men ate more of anything they wanted to measure-- from steak to salad-- than men who were sicker. It's similar to the studies that find that healthier men have more sex.

At first glance I thought this was complete bullshit but after reading the article and considering what I've read on the subject I've come to the conclusion that it is complete bullshit.

Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker.

^My ex's 6 year old cousin knew that saying, believe it or not. I was shocked when the kid came right out and said it.
