Convert mp4 to avi

Can you convert an mp4 file to an avi file using virtualdub? If you know how, can you please tell me or post a link that shows how to do it step by step.

If not, can you tell me a program that will convert it.

There is a free program from eRightSoft called super c that will convert almost anything into almost anything. http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html It works for me hope this helps

mp4 conversion is tricky, the file format is very new. i don't know off hand of any programs that can convert it. Short of recording the video stream piecemeal. The could be one out there that will do it tho, google mp4 file conversion.

well the mp4 specifications are from april.

however mpeg4 is around waaaay longer. if you have luck this is just a mpeg4 quicktime or divx file .. or FFmpeg. just try for example "super" - as suggested.

I have never had super c fail on a conversion, sometimes I have to tweak a few settings as it sugests. I normally convert things to mpeg4 and the file size decreases by about 10 times from raw avi such as a webcam or mov file taken with a camera. You can also play around with bit rate, dimensions, audio track etc. It will also play just about anything.

This converter should do what you want, I use it to convert mov files from my camera to avi so I can edir them, it also joins files. It is also free

UGH, guys... MP4 and MPEG4 are two VERY distinct and VERY different compression methods... MPEG4 is a form of AVI file compression. MP4 is itself a form of compression and a file extension. MPEG4 video has an .avi file extension, MP4 has a .mp4 file extension. They are quite different.

Woops in that case the super c prog is the one to use. I only use the mp4camtoavi prog for mov files from my camera. Have a look at the super c site (link in the first of posts in this thread) and see what you think.

honestly, i've never encoundtered an .mp4 file that was actually MPEG4.

But if that is the case, we really need more info on the file in question.

mind those files were from the time before mp4 was defined i believe most of them actually were quicktime files from the CCC but i also had some porn files with that
