  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Cool trends that faded out

RushRooms. These were public spaces, usually in restaurants or bars, which got taken over by cliques who would eat or drink their lunch while having the Rush Limbaugh radio show piped in. Of course there was a lot of hootin' and hollerin' to whatever points were made on his show. These were popular enough for nearly every big city (probably of 1/4 million or more) to have at least one of these spaces, and they peaked around 1994. Interestingly, there is ALMOST NOTHING on the Internet which describes this phenomenon.

Sorry to derail this thread and get so off-topic because, after all, RushRooms were ANYTHING BUT cool.

Web Tv

When webtv first came out. I spent five hundred dollars for a console. Webtv couldn't save any files and was able to play very very few files but was all the rage.

Remember a time when you went into a video rental place and saw a sea of vhs tapes?

Nope ... TAB was a victim of the Saccharin scare (some claimed the sweetener caused cancer, which was later disproven).

Kaftans for men. They were popular in the 70's and I had several that I used to wear regularly (only at home, though). They were comfy to wear, and you could get around quite happily with nothing on underneath! ;)

The electronic typewriter

I'll see your electronic and raise you a manual.

This is the typewriter I typed all of my university essays back- in the early 70s. My brother used it in the mid 60s to type all of his college papers.

(I tried to type my name and date on it, but the ribbon is dryer than the Sahara.)

Thanks for that. ..|

Here's one for my generation. The younger folks don't know the joy of this:

Sniffing mimeograph paper in school.

(Seriously, can you smell it in your mind? ;) )

^I wasn't particularly fond of the smell, actually. And I had a teacher in high school who was still using old mimeographed handouts in the mid 90's. (They had long since stopped smelling, of course.)

Camera film

An article about Kodak impending doom for all you nostalgia buffs.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/10/01/us-kodak-history-idUSTRE79000720111001

Daniel Carp took over as CEO in 2000, right around the time that digital cameras started to become an affordable alternative to film cameras. Taking pictures without the use of film and the option to forgo printing proved a crippling blow to the company, which sold film, photo paper, and the systems that develop film into prints.

Scratch and Sniff stickers.

I used to love these in elementary in the eighties.
