The Ditto machines in my grade school used a purple ink, and they printed on cheap newsprint paper, thicker than newspapers, but the same kind of porous, fibrous off-white paper. I don't remember any particular smell to them, though. They were totally dry by the time they reached the students. Originally the machines were hand-crank types, but later were replaced by electric machines. I remember getting to run one off once and it was great fun. Later came mimeograph machines, which gave prints that had black ink on white paper, instead of the purple ink. But I remember those as being more expensive or something, and only used for special purposes. Eventually they all became replaced by copier machines that use toner instead of ink, and that was the end of the Ditto era.
