i have an '03 jetta and its been a dream.

i love my car and its taken me up and down the state.

i plan to trade it in for a newer model in the not too distant future.

the new rabbits are nice from what i've seen of them.

When one factors in cost, maintenance, reliability, etc., the corolla wins every time, hands-down.

As a mechanic for the better part of a decade, I can tell you I saw more VWs in my shop than toyotas - lexus included.

I'd avoid the Prius. Mileage isn't what they want you to believe, and they're apparently bad for the environment. It seems the energy required to manufacture one is considerably greater than any savings in fuel over the life of the car. That, and the plant in Canada where the batteries are produced is such a polluter that NASA has used the surrounding desolated areas to test Mars rover vehicles.

IMHO:

The VW is just NOT there yet!

Toyota is light years ahead of VW; but they are catching up........just NOT yet! lol

I would stay with the Corolla, you know it's good and bad points, and you also know that it will give you good gas mileage!

I'd say in a few years, VW will either meet or exceed Toyota's ability to just do it better...

Good luck and let us know your "final" decision!(*8*)(*8*):kiss:

Jetta would definitely be my pick from that group.

Toyota just doesn't have anything that I find attractive.

There are few things I know alot about. One of them is cars.
Why aren't you considering Mazda or Subaru? Better, much more interesting cras by far then what you have mentioned!

The Toyota Corrolla isn't bad but horrible in a side collission without side airbags. The VWs are well known for reliability issues....see consumer reports or the fact that they are Mexican made and had yet another recall just yesterday. (Although I agree they are cute and come with a great deal of stuff for the money on the base models)

Every Prius driver I know ADORES their car and are all pretty happy with 50+ mpg.

This being said I would still recomend any Subaru (the new, cute Impreza starts under 17k with most of the bells and whistes and a 5 start safety rating AND AWD) or a Mazda (the 3 is like driving a sports car---a Ferrari compared to the sedate Toyotas)

Good Luck!

It's the age old question of style over function, isn't it?
I've had two of each, 2 VW's and 2 Toyotas.
1 of the VW's was a really good to almost great car and that was my Golf (Rabbit). AfterI decided to step up to a Jetta 1.8t and it was shall we say, not good. Electrical problems up the wazoo. Window switches failed, sunroof switch failed, driver's seat mount and frame failed ( and I'm not that big a guy) fabric on the driver's seat wore prematurely. When it was right it was nice but it was more often not.
As for Toyotas, There was time when I needed a new car but cheap.I bought a new Tercel. Could not kill this car. Best damn car I've owned for reliability. mt partner made me trade it in at 126000 miles but it didn't need anything. Still had the original spark plugs and battery in it.
The Toyota I have now is Tundra Limited Access cab 4X4 truck. It's totally loaded and there isn't a thing I don't like about it. We bought it used with 47000 mile on it last year and the only thing we've had to do to it in 10000 miles is an oil change.

For style, go for the VW but keep your wallet handy. For function and reliability you can't beat a Toyota.

VW still has reliability issues despite that fact that you probably really enjoyed the test drive, keep it in mind.

Is there a particular reason you're ignoring the Honda Civic which is rated higher than any of the four vehicles that you're considering? Honda has the same top rated reliability as Toyota.

If you're doing a shitload of driving, the Prius makes the most sense.

We looked in April 06 and chose the Civic and have only had routine maintenance and near EPA fuel economy.

Car and Driver, as well as Consumer Reports mention a "redesign for 2008".
Make sure you get the option package that includes the side curtain airbags.

The Mazda3 is rated best in class up against the Corolla, Jetta/Rabbit and Sentra. Take a look at it again. You definitely get more bang for your buck with the Mazda. Plus its a blast to drive, and is the most sporty looking of all your choices.
