Could you be tolerant of gays if you were straight?!

To all gays and bisexuals on JUB, do you think you would be accepting of gays if you weren't gay/bi yourself? I've wondered this myself a few times and I'm not sure. In all honesty, I don't think I would be very tolerant of gays if I were heterosexual. Of course, I'll never know for sure.

I think I would be. I'm generally pretty open minded and I don't think being straight would change that.

While I am a christian I have been raised first and foremost to study and believe in science. Look at the animal kingdom, homosexuality is commonplace in most species, from the most humble creature to certain monkey/ape species (sorry can't remember what one, but it was mostly females).

There was an interesting documentary on this actually which I watched a good decade ago, even featured animals you wouldn't expect such as an elephant that seemed to want to 'play' with other male elephants and not females.

In another way though, through many gay male and female voices I've listened to, why would I not tolerate it? I've heard many personal stories about peoples plights growing up, how they wished every day they would be straight to avoid the suffering they received from others around them.

TL;DR - Gay, bisexual, transexual, transgender, straight (and all the others under the rainbow). Humans, all of them. Just like candy they come in all shapes, sizes and flavours.

Between being libertarian and following where scholarship concerning the Bible leads, I can't see me not getting there.

Well, i'm personally not attracted to transgendered people and don't think i'll ever really "get" them. However, I do support their legal and medical rights, and the right to live their life however they see fit. It really disgusts and saddens me when I hear stories about them getting beaten or even killed just for being who they are.


I imagine that's the same a lot of way straight people feel about gay people.

It's hard to really say how you would respond when you've lived your life under the circumstances. I only know the me that grew up homosexual.

Probably. My sister grew up to be a yaoi fangirl, and one of my close friends from school turned out to be gay. It would have come about sooner or later.

Sexual orientation has NOTHING To with it....The ONE thing a Human being knows to do is treat a person the way he wants to be treated. We're taught that @ home or we learn it @ school by the friendships/relationships we make...

Mike your HONESTY about how you would treat a certain "group" of people tells more about you than your sexual orientation...

What people fail to "get" is that it's about who YOU are on the inside.

Let me say this to you Mike...If you walked into the room as a total stranger I would Respect you and your "space". You don't have to say one word or do ANYTHING to earn my Respect..I give it to you because that is who I am and that is how I roll with people. If we "talk" I will then decide if I want you in my Life as a friend but the one thing you already have from me is my Respect..That was given when you entered the room...

It's about YOUR character not your Sexual Orientation...

Generally yes. There are a few ones I know who are loud, attention-seeking drama queens that I find annoying, although I can still tolerate them. I just wish they act like most normal people - with self respect and respect for others around them.

Well if I were straight and the rest of my life stayed the same, I think I'd be weird about it for a while at first. But I have a few friends who are gay/bi...so I'd end up getting used to it.

erm, I grew up on a Millitary Base during the ban on gays serving and in a country where it was illegal to be gay and I used to be pretty camp-a-phobic so probably not. I am ashamed to admit this btw and glad I didn't turn out like it.
