Countries you never hear about

I def agree about mongolia, except that "no one cares about it", i just think that theres just nothing that is newsworthy happening.

Yeah i havent heard of a lot of the island countries for obvious reasons.

What about countries that youre surprised to hear on the news?

I would say the Philippines.

I love geography and international politics (I participated in MUN conferences in high school), so I know most countries. Most probably don't apply to me in real life though.

But, I do have some connections in real life. One of my closest friends is half Mongolian (her relatives wrestle in Mongolia!)
Some of my middle school Spanish class went to El Salvador for a spring break field trip.
I also learn some geography from Survivor.

By the way, the country isn't Micronesia, it's "Federal States of Micronesia". Micronesia is the general name for the region.

I'd say the most obscure countries are Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar, Bahrain, Niger, Guinea-Bissau, The Gambia, Sao Tome and Principe, Eritrea, and Djibouti

I agree with Mongolia being such a significant historical nation yet so widely ignored in global news and politics. I looked them up and discovered that Mongolia (for its size) is the least densely populated country in the world. There are only 2.9 MILLION PEOPLE in Mongolia.

Ironically, Mongolia is one of our allies in the war in Iraq and has successfully committed 120 troops to the Middle-East. The percentage of their troops vs. national population is almost nearly the same percentage as U.S. troop vs. national population in Iraq. 0.0004%.

I love seeing maps, particularily in american shows (like the back drop in SNL) where the state of Tasmania (state of australia) and the entire country of New zealand are completely missing.

If you're an American, then, you've never heard of these countries because there's never been American military involvement there! Me, I'm Australian, and I love maps generally, and atlases, so I've at least heard of all of these countries.

That's the Czech Republic.....

^Took me a moment to figure out what you meant. I was wondering why Austria wasn't on the screen before it dawned on me Switzerland had annexed the Czech Republic ;)
