What are some remakes you think are better than the orifinal?

I Will Always Love You
Whitney's version I liked better than Dolly's.

I'm Every Woman
I liked Whitney's version over Chaka's.

Endless Love
Loved Mariah and Luther's version over Diana and Lionel's.

Rare Earth "Get Ready" over The Temptations version.
Cold Blood featuring Lydia Pense w/The Pointer Sisters version of "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" over Stevie Wonder's version. From the Cold Blood Album entitled ....."Thriller"( 1973)....yes before Micheal Jackson there was a "Thriller" out .
Les McCann " What's Going On?" from a live album recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival over Marvin Gaye's version. There is also a very good version by a now defunct group led by Brain Auger which was known as Brian Auger's Oblivion Express....and lastly an instrumental version by a jazz group called Azymuth.

Jane Monheit's version of "Over The Rainbow" over Patti LaBelle's version...but I still love Judy Garland's.

Massive Attack's version of "Be Thankful For What You Got" over William DeVaughn's version.

When I saw the word remake I was thinking movies. I expect songs to ve covered by other artists. And how about that Dolly? She won twice when the dong she wrote did so well with Whiney's voice.

"The National Anthem" (Star Spangled Banner) - Whitney's version over anyone else that has ever sung the song

"I Will Always Love You" - Whitney's version over Dolly's

"I'm Every Woman" - Whitney's version over Chaka's

"All The Man That I Need" - Whitney's version over Sister Sledge's

"For the Love of You" - Whitney's version over The Isely Brothers'

"I Believe In You & Me" - Whitney's version over Four Tops'

"I Love The Lord" - Whitney's version over Richard Smallwood's

"Step By Step" - Whitney's version over Annie Lennox's

"Higher Love" - Whitney's version over Steve Winwood's

"It's Gonna Be A Lovely Day" - Soul System's version over Bill Withers'

"Choosey Lover" - Aaliyah's version over The Isely Brothers'

"Giving Up" - Aaliyah's version over Donny Hathaway's

"Got To Give It Up" - Aaliyah's version over Marvin Gaye's

"Never Felt This Way" - Alicia Key's version over Brian McKnights'

"I'll Be There" - Mariah's version over The Jackson 5's

"I Still Believe" - Mariah's version over Brenda K. Starr's

"Open Arms" - Mariah's version over Journey's

"You've Got A Friend" - James Taylor's version over Carole King's

"Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" - Lauryn Hill's version over Al Green's

"You Don't Have To Cry" - Kenny Lattimore & Chante Moore's version over Mtume's

"Am I Dreaming" - Xscape feat Ol Skool & Keith Sweat's version over Atlantic Starr's

"My First Love" - Avant & Keke Wyatt's version over Rene & Angela Winbush's

On top of the usual ('I Will Always Love You' by Whitney, 'I'll Be There' by Mariah)..I have a small list:

Run-Leona Lewis
Stop Crying Your Heart Out-Leona Lewis
Without You-Mariah
Bringing On the Heartbreak-Mariah
What Hurts the Most-Rascal Flatts
The Heart of the Matter-India.Arie
If I Could-Regina Belle
I Want To Know What Love Is-Mariah Carey
Fields of Gold-Eva Cassidy
People Get Ready-Eva Cassidy

Just to name a few. And there's been a ton of songs performed and recorded by Idols that I think are better than the original.

The Beautiful Ones ~ Mariah Carey over Prince

Over The rainbow ~ IZ [BEST RENDITION I"VE HEARD IN MY LIFE, so calm and mellow]

RUN ~ Leona Lewis [I love snow patrols version also, but leonas vocals just add a certain impact to it]

Sweet Dreams ~ The Big Pink over Beyonce [it got the indie treatment]

Frente - Bizarre Love Triangle

DJ Sammy - Heaven, California Dreamin', Boys of Summer

Janis Joplin - Summertime, Ball and Chain

Marc Almond - What Makes a Man a Man

Erasure - Take a Chance on Me

Mary J Blige - One

Aretha Franklin - Respect

Tina Turner - Let's stay Together, Proud Mary

Re: Are there any covers that you prefer over the original?

All the ones I can think of atm...

I Will Always Love You originally by Dolly Parton, Whitney Houston's version is supreme.
Hurt originally by Nine Inch Nails, Johnny Cash's version is better.
Heaven originally by Brian Adams, DJ Sammy's song is better.
Black Magic Woman was originally by Fleetwood Mac (shocking I know), but Santana's version is the standard.
Whiskey in the Jar is not a Metallica song, I know Thin Lizzy covered it but they were not the original group either.

Re: Are there any covers that you prefer over the original?

Janis Joplin's rendition of "Me and Bobby McGee" is MUCH better than Kris Kristofferson's.

Man I wanted to mention that one but you beat me to it....LOL...Queen Dolly's original version is great, Linda Ronstadt's cover is Good but Whitney's unique vocals just took the song to another level & place....

When Dolly learned of Whitney's death she said she will Always Love Whitney and she acknowledges her in Concert...Dolly is forever the Classy Icon...

Another Classic I have to add to the list is Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't make you Love me"..So many people have TRIED to reproduce Bonnie's Magic...Many have come close but none have made it their own....This does not fall under the topic of this thread but I'm just saying the Truth...Prince covered the song and it was good but he didnt make it better....Bonnie owns that Classic....

Re: Are there any covers that you prefer over the original?

My favourite cover of Hallelujah, by K. D. Lang. And perhaps more of note, Leonard Cohen's favourite cover of Hallelujah. :)
