Just because those covers reached No. 1 on the charts doesn't mean they're good.British girl-group the All Saints also released a cover of "Lady Marmalade", which was a U.K. No. 1 in 1998.
Chart factoid: It was a double A-side with "Under the Bridge" - itself a cover of the Red Hot Chili Peppers song.
Oh and that Christina Aguilera / Lil Kim / Mya / Pink cover was also a U.K. No. 1 in 2002. I don't think the original ever was.
Pat Boone routinely covered songs by Black artists . But again, Black music was "race music," and White audiences did not want to hear Black singers. So pat Boone's version was sanitized (and pitiful).
Now hear little Richard's version which was far better - but too Black for White audiences
