It's 7:30 AM now. I booted up the laptop at 6:30.

The CPU is still running at 100%. (And the hard drive is working the entire time.)

This can't be right. You shouldn't have to wait an hour before you get a computer that you can use.

Any hints in helping me track down what's doing this every morning?

Also, when shutting down at night, this thing downloads and installs 7 different items and I have no idea what it's installing. It sometimes takes 10 minutes to do this.

Sounds like you have a serious kind of bot/malware infection. I'd physically disconnect from the internet and see what happens. Your machine could be getting used remotely to send spam (or worse).

it installs updates. are you still on a slow dial up connection? maybe it takes exceptionally long to get the updates done.

also .. you should be able to see which process takes up the cpu ..

It must have been caught in a loop or something. I rebooted it and it seems to be back to the 10-minute thing.

But I got these screen caps before I shut down to give you an idea:

This is the way it ran for an hour and a quarter:

These are the services that were running in the Task Manager before I rebooted. (There were 2 1/2 more screens of 'stopped' services. There are over 150 services total.)

I've been Googling these services to find out what they are since I got the machine, but very few websites tell me if it's safe to turn them off. I'm sure I don't use very many of them.

I have malware protection at the source (my ISP) and my system is constantly being scanned for it. So far, it's only caught a suspect 'cookie'.

No. I'm on Broadband now. (Sympatico is doing away with DSL and I had to change.)

um .. yeah i don't mind the services .. (although you might want to get rid of the dell stuff)
show me which process is using the cpu time. click "show processes of all users" in the process tab of the task manager ..

There are far too many processes running in that diagnostic lineup. Try typing "msconfig" into the run bar and scan through the starup processes - if they're not giving you a warning sign that says disabling them will cause fatal errors, take them off the list.

It's remarkable how much Windows has evolved recently in the direction of *nix.

They even give you a PID in the Task Manager now! :)

^ nothing to be concerned about. but you still haven't posted a process list. there can 20 quadrillion services and they don't need to have any influence on the cpuload.

Sorry, I didn't know you wanted the processes. I don't have 20 quadrillion of them, but they don't seem to be doing much except using some RAM.

I just noticed the button at the bottom to show ALL the processes. I was wondering why it indicated that there were 61 processes but I wasn't seeing that many. I've got them all now:

I would run dxdiag and see how much RAM you are using. Most PCs now need at least 2GB of ram to be remotely efficient.

As I mentioned earlier, it runs quite consistently at about 33%. (1GB of RAM)

Well gsdx, let me tell you know, you have WAY too many processes running. It is no wonder that your CPU and RAM operate at near full capacity when starting up you computer, look at how many items it is starting up. You need to turn most of these off from your startup processes in order to get your computer to turn off with any sort of efficiency. To do this, follow these steps:

Open up "msconfig". If you are using XP, go to "Start", go to "run" and type "msconfig". If you are using windows 7, type in "msconfig" into the search bar on the start menu and open up the "msconfig" program.

Click on the "startup" tab. Uncheck most, if not all, of the programs in the list. The only programs I run at startup are my virus protection and keyboard/mouse programs. Everything else is unchecked.

You will be prompted to restart your computer. Choose the option to restart and see if there is a difference in your startup speed.

I've been in there, but I have no idea which ones are safe to turn off and which ones are necessary to keep the computer running. (It's a language I haven't been able to learn yet.)

.. sorry. But if you don't have a clue, don't try to give advice.
- this is not win XP anymore
- those are all processes incl services.

gsdx has 63 processes running, this is just 5 more than I have on my win7 installation. given the fact that he is using a laptop those 5 processes are probably already taken from some weird dell or whatever software stuff.

back to topic

in that process list there is tfservice.exe which is using 49% = one core.
that program is part of your firewall (comodo) and just from googling it seems others have the same problem.
try to disable "thread fire" within comodo.

^ Thanks, Corny. As I mentioned earlier, I've been Googling the list trying to find out what each one is and if it can be disabled safely. There was a note somewhere (msconfig, I believe) which warned that some selections could not be disabled. I'm guessing that I would not be able to disable something which could disable the entire system.

I'm getting there slowly but surely. I have to learn a whole new language first, though.

Relax. You're not going to blow up your computer by turning something off.

Just don't have so many programs running at start up. Things like AVG, Ad aware, MSN, Yahoo, LimeWire, I tunes, all that shit.

Well, I just turned off a few more things in 'MSCONFIG' (a few Yahoo things, a Dell Support update thing, a 'telephony' thing, and a Bluetooth thing). I rebooted and the RAM usage dropped from 33% to 27%.

That seems significant for things I'll never use.
