It has a "rigorous" definition invented by people trying to draw specious parallels between an instrument of inquiry, and just believing in unicorns and fairies 'cause that makes us feel all tingly.

Whoever noticed the phenomenon is irrelevant. I oppose scientism primarily as one who supports science, because the belief that only by science can we know anything is not only unscientific but dangerous.
