Daft Punk to Wear Star Wars Helmets During GRAMMY Performance

French duo will perform with Stevie Wonder, Pharrell and Nile Rodgers

Rehearsals for the 56th annual GRAMMYs are well underway at multiple locations around Los Angeles, which means details are starting to emerge about Sunday night's all-star performances.

Among the surprises in store for the CBS broadcast: The Hollywood Reporter hears French DJ duo Daft Punk will don Star Wars stormtrooper helmets for their time onstage, which they will share with Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams and producer and guitar legend Nile Rodgers. According to a source, the masks look like they could be from the "The Empire Strikes Back" era and appear to be authentic.

Artist Unmasks Daft Punk for New Sculpture Series

Sculptor Xavier Veilhan got lucky. It wasn't just that Daft Punk agreed to be 3D scanned for the French artist's new series, Producers, but that they agreed to do so sans helmets.

"The funny thing is I didn't even ask them," Veilhan tells me via phone call while installing Music, a double exhibition opening this week at Galerie Perrotin's New York and Paris locations. "It was a very logical response to my proposal: I proposed to introduce them as producers, not as musicians, and so after talking to them, we decided that they should appear with their civilian names. [...] They proposed to me: 'Okay, we should make the sculpture the non-existing image of us. So if somebody wants to see how we are like in real [life] they'll have to look at the sculpture."

The resulting artworks are part of a collection inspired by the parallels Veilhan saw between music producers and visual artists—"like a kind of not-very-visible person behind the work." In addition to Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, Veilhan has turned Nigel Godrich, Quincy Jones, Giorgio Moroder, The Neptunes (Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams), Lee “Scratch” Perry, Rick Rubin and Philippe Zdar, among others, into statues. "I had been thinking about it for a few years and we made the decision quite late. Everything was done in a rush, but it was a great energy, because the biggest part was not to make the actual sculptures, but to contact the actual producers," Veilhan says, "and I didn't have a clue about how much they would respond to the idea."

Nothing to really add outside me wanting a new "Alive" album now but probably not getting it until 2017. :(

Daft Punk Unchained

THE STORY OF TWO UNCOMPROMISING ARTISTS

Daft Punk Unchained is the first film about the pop culture phenomenon that is Daft Punk, the duo with 12 million albums sold worldwide and seven Grammy Awards. Throughout their career Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo have always resisted compromise and the established codes of show business. They have remained determined to maintain control of every link in the chain of their creative process. In the era of globalisation and social networks, they rarely speak in public and neither do they show their faces on TV.

If you missed out on the limited edition vinyl of Daft Punk’s now legendary Tron: Legacy soundtrack you’re in luck as Disney is reissuing it.

Available now to pre-order via Disney’s store, the album had initially only been available in North America on CD and as a digital download.

The original 180 gram double vinyl would normally set you back £150 on Discogs marketplace, which I think we can all agree is just ridiculous.

But you can now snap one up now for a very reasonable $29.99 – so make sure you pounce before those pesky vinyl speculators ruin everyone’s fun.
