In a major win for the telecom industry, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai announced plans Tuesday to scrap net neutrality regulations that require internet providers to treat all content equally.

Since being designated FCC chair by President Donald Trump in January, Pai has prioritized gutting the net neutrality provisions enacted by the Obama administration in 2015.

The move, long sought by internet providers like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon, would give the already monopolistic companies even more power over how its customers access content online.

Netflix joined with tech giants like Google parent company Alphabet, Facebook and hundreds of other websites earlier this year to protest Pai’s plan and encourage members of the public to submit their comments to the FCC. The FCC received more than 22 million comments, most of which were opposed to the change.

:grrr:

Fight it, fight it with all your zeal. But given the current regime's lack of interest for the consumer, and their tendency to pander to big money, the Net Neutrality rules will probably be swept aside by hook or by crook. :(

If 22 million comments didn't help, I don't know what would. #-o

If all goes as Pai plans, the FCC will meet and vote on the repeal on Dec. 14. It’s expected to pass 3-2, along party lines.

Didn't Trump recently say that countries like China and North Korea should open up the internet to everyone?

If google, Facebook, and Netflix agreed their content could not be accessed via any IPS that didn't operate with net neutrality, that would do it. Or if Amazon did so.

This corporate thing persistently and perpetually against net neutrality thing has always been ridiculous. It's like some very rich people up there just don't want the civilians to have nice things at all because they think they're not rich enough.

Praying the best for you people in there.

If what could happen actually happens and people have to start paying extra for internet access to the "social-media tier" or "banking tier" or "shopping tier" or "news tier" or "streaming tier" or god forbid the "porn tier", there will be a revolt. It will not go over well with the public.

You can say goodby to a open net in the USA, next could be Canada which sadly adopts many similar policies as the USA. Mexico and Portugal are examples of what to expect if Net neutrality fails. Its in line with what is happening with consolidation of TV, newspapers, and radio ownership.

This is what the GOP and the extremely rich want. More limited information and choices to keep the masses stupid and brainwashed. They have proof it always works on their own base and that control with a system exactly what North Korea and China is what they want in the USA.

This could backfire somewhat on the tRumpanzee base. As just 1 of millions of examples Comcast is a huge internet provider. It owns MSNBC. Comcast could and most likely would ban Fox news channels and force its net and cable tV customers to content it owns. Currently if Comcast was to do this they would be sued by Fox because all traffic is to be treated equal. There will be no lawsuit if the provider can block, throttle any content it doesn't want to provide or provide at a extra cost. This means you could have to pay for that cable service in a TV package as it is now then pay again if you want to access that package on the internet. There are many possibilities to how they will redesign the additional charges and reduction of content.

Not being covered as much as the FCC has repealed the rules that telecom companies do not have to maintain the old copper lines. These are the landlines that carry old old analog dial up, traditional telephones, and DSL. This will have huge effects on rural areas, but not exclusive to just rural areas. If the copper lines are not required to be maintained then a great deal of the rural population will be left with wireless or satellite. Old copper line infrastructure is in deplorable shape now in many areas already. Speaking of the deplorable s voting against their best interest loss of net neutrality will slaughter them because they are lucky if they have one choice in a internet provider, either copper or cable. They don't have fiber and they won't be getting either.

Loss of net neutrality will end the cord cutting. It will end torrents, Kodi TV, and patented content. It will end VPN's. It will end millions of websites by blocking anything that doesn't meet the goals and political content the local isp wants you to see.
You will buy packages for very limited websites such as packages on cable. Such as basic cable which you can add sports or movie, very limited specialty channels.

Another thing is certain you won't be getting any gay porn sites by the majority of ISP's, that will be blocked or throttled back so slow you would be better off paying less for old dial up, which is copper lines. So bye bye JUB.

The internet is a utility in 2017 anyone who doesn't think so is either very old or foolish. It is a very dangerous transformation of the media to far right wing corporate interest in this authoritarian oligarchy.

^ I hope it doesn't happen to you guys. On many tech sites such ARS there is a lot fear by Canadian comment that they are afraid if its successfully done here in the USA it could happen in Canada. One thing everyone is saying is FUCK tRump and the shit hole GOP.

One thing everyone is saying is FUCK tRump and the shit hole GOP.

We've been saying that since months before the election.

Our CRTC (Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications) is way different than the FCC. They listen to the people and not the government.

The repeal of Net Neutrality is a hot topic in America, but it can be very difficult to understand. That’s why the BURGER KING® brand created WHOPPER® Neutrality, a social experiment that explains the effects of the repeal of Net Neutrality by putting it in terms anyone can understand: A WHOPPER® sandwich.

Gratefully, my locally owned, non-profit, $49.95/month 1 gig up and down service released the following statement:

'E. Will changes in “net neutrality” affect my NextLight service?
As a community-owned network, our customers come first. Regardless of any changes in FCC policy, we will continue to provide the same excellent service you’ve come to expect, without shuttling users and services into “fast lanes” and “slow lanes.” This is your NextLight, so you are our priority.

We do connect to a number of long-haul providers that tie [our] local network into the larger internet. While those companies can choose to provide their services in any manner consistent with the regulations, they do not dictate [our] policies.'
